What do you think?

Really nice concept! I included it in my Ludum Dare 38 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look :)

Please note this package is highly experimental and some features might be buggy. - Improved AI difficulty and performance - Added multiplayer - Added continent bonus

King of the world is a game about a small world with three generals or "wanna be world leaders" that fight to claim the most areas, the objective of the game is to lead your general to victory by taking out all the other generals. The game is inspired by the board game Risk.

This game was created for #LD38 and was made within 72 hours. It was originally intended to be part of the compo but I ran out of time and decided to polish it up a bit and enter the jam instead which I think was a good call.

Controls:

  • Drag your mouse or use ASWD to navigate.

  • Use mouse wheel to zoom in or out.

  • Left click with your mouse to select/execute.

  • Press ESC to cancel current active selection.

All the necessary knowledge to play the game is covered in the in-game tutorial. But read the text below for a summary of how to play.

Like Risk you capture countries by moving units into them. The green countries which have a white colour displayed when hovering over them are unoccupied and can be taken with a single unit, keep in mind that you you must have atleast 2 units in a country to be able to attack.

This game is a mixed realtime/turnbased game. Every fifth second the turn ends and one action will be performed for each player if any actions are queued for that player. This means if no action was queued no action will be taken for that player. All turns are processed simultaneously. Keep in mind that you can queue up several actions which will be executed top to bottom but only one per turn.

Every fifth turn each country receives new units. If the country is the home country of a general (i.e the general stands on that country) it will receive 2 units, all other countries will only receive 1 unit.

Select a country that you own (you play as red) with left click and then perform one of the three available actions:

  • Move (moves all units but 1 in the selected country to the country that you click on)

  • Attack (attacks the country that you click on with all units but 1 from the selected country)

  • Move/attack 50% (same action as above but with only 50% of the units)

To move an army after you have selected a country you click on another country adjacent to the selected country (these will be highlighted) that you own. To attack you click on an adjacent country to the selected country that an enemy owns or is unoccupied. If you attack with atleast 1 more unit than the enemy you will capture that country. To move/attack 50% simply click twice on the selected country and then do the same as explained previously.

To win you must take out the other generals by capturing the country that the general occupies. However all players can move the general by clicking on it and then choosing a country to move to, but it must be connected to the origin country and the general will only move one country per turn.

If you are unsure of how something works try the in-game tutorial for a interactive tutorial.
