What do you think?

I had quite a bit of reflection and musings about the finite span of life while playing this. And honestly, after I put it down and went about my routine life, I realized that it hit closer to home than anticipated: I only hint at it in my video below, but basically the TL;DR is that I found a loved one lifeless at home, during a time when I was already grieving for two other loved ones suddenly lost about two weeks prior to then.

I don't say that to be a downer, I've moved well past it all. I say it because I find it wonderful that a simple, short little game like this could stir that kind of emotion inside me and really connect me with Olivia and Erin. Your narrative was bittersweet, and super duper sad with some great visceral imagery, but it affirmed the mentality I had developed regarding not taking time or loved ones for granted. :) Great job, loved it.

Obligatory let's play here:

The game has its ups and downs, but its pretty good. 4/5

‘Looking Back’ is a narrative-driven walking simulator loosely based on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The story follows Olivia, a woman grieving over the recent death of her girlfriend, Erin; while recalling memories from the last year of their relationship, Olivia undertakes a journey into the Underworld in an attempt to rescue Erin from death.

The game takes about 30 minutes to play and there is no save function, so it is suggested that you play it in its entirety in one sitting. As always, please let us know if you find any bugs and we will try to fix them as soon as possible.

The game was developed by Saran Walker as part of her dissertation at the University of Edinburgh. She is also conducting a study based on player reactions to the game. Surveys are now closed, but thank you to everyone who participated! We will post a link to Saran's paper when it becomes available so you can see what's come from all this research.
