What do you think?

Hello, 🙂

I'm hoping I can get in touch with you. I see this thread is 9 years inactive, so..finges crossed😊

My name is MadShmupper and I'm part of a group of developers working on porting games to handheld Linux devices. Our project is named PortMaster, and we have an active Discord server in which you are very welcome to come check out any time.

For the past couple of years, we've added a nice amount Gamemaker games to various Linux devices, and we'd love to include your games as well. Although these devices have some limitations with OpenGL, games that use GLES2 and SDL generally run very smoothly.

We at PortMaster, firmly believe in reaching out to content creators/game authors like yourself to ask for consent in distributing their free game files within a ready to run port in PortMaster. Without your consent, the user will need to manually add their game files.

It would be fantastic if you could grant us permission to include your data.win etc.. of "Outbound" within a packaged port. May we distribute the game file/s in question, please?

Your game would undoubtedly be a superb addition to these handheld devices.

Especially in a "ready to run" format. You will of course be properly thanked and noted as game author/maker. PortMaster will be responsible for the ports maintenance should any be needed. However, as the author/maker, you are welcome to come check us out and have any say you'd like involving said port.

Please note that we are not looking to profit or take credit for any of the games we port. Our primary goal is to introduce more games to our beloved handheld devices, and showcase the creations of fine indie devs like yourself. We're also branching out to other ARM platforms. We are growing🙂

Thank you for any consideration that you may lend towards our request!

Best regards, MadShmupper & Everyone at PortMaster

Have not played it yet but I love the pixelart! :)

Gadzooks! It's hard to believe that this amazing experience was crafted in only a short week's time! Outbound is seriously professional caliber.

Outbound is overflowing with polish throughout. From the title screen to the gorgeously detailed character and monster sprites; the subtle pan-down from space on game start; the catchy soundtrack and juicy sound effects; the variety of monsters and maps; the Metroidvania-esque upgrade path to access new parts of the map; and so very much more. The style and theming is impressively consistent across every facet of the game.

If there's one thing I had to find to balk about, it's the camera. The player moves fast horizontally. I lost multiple games from running head-first into a pit or the clutches of an approaching enemy wave. The characters are large and expressive, but this comes at the cost of less horizontal space and time to react when enemies appear at its edges. I think the developer could address by having camera look-ahead (placing the player on the opposite edge of the screen in the direction they are looking). Slowing down player movement speed could also work, but I do rather like zipping around the map.

I would have also liked to see more contrast in the in-game menus. While gorgeous, the in-game graphics already make great use of a wide range of contrasting shapes and tones. This means the menus tend to compete visually with those in-game graphics, making them difficult to read. A simple dither effect on the background game while a menu is up might be enough to give you the necessary readability contrast.

One last nit: key hints, pretty please! Every entry seems to have its own preference for what appropriate keyboard keys are for the A and B buttons. ;)

Expertly built and crafted. 5/5.

"CONGLATURATIONS!"

Beauitful, fantastic game! I included it in part 7 of my GBJam 4 compilation video series, if you would like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/ElIjYzB_05w

This was amazing, had a lot of fun with it. Somehow I got smashed by a meteor?? My only complaint is that the controls seem too slippery, I fell off quite a few times

Controls:
A = Jump/Start
S = Attack
Up/Down/Left/Right = Navigate

From the long lost manual found in a time capsule left in the late 80s:

In AD 2101, war
was happening.

Shot down by a
SPACE SHIP, our
HERO is stranded
on the mysterious
ALIEN HOMEWORLD.

Protected only by
TWO GENERATORS,
our HERO's BEACON
is calling for
rescue.

The ALIENs are
driven mad by the
sound of the
BEACON!

Protect the
GENERATORS and
the BEACON!

Survive long
enough to be
OUTBOUND.

Tips:

When you die you have access to the loadout shop! For 100 shmeckles, you can get the Double Jump ability, which gives you access to the Rechargers. Shooting a Recharger will refill that side's Generator life by up to 50 HP per wave. The Double Jump is the only purchasable item that doesn't go away after you die!

When the first wave is starting, venture into a Hive room on either side, and destroy the first wave of eggs. You'll get a lot of shmeckles to spend in the shop without the risk of the other side becoming overwhelmed by unchecked enemies!

Crabbens sometimes drop direct upgrades for your weapons or shield, so jungle them whenever possible!

If 5 waves prove to be too easy because of your wicked skills, try increasing the number of waves from the title screen with left/right! There are a few more types of enemies that appear during higher waves!
