R1VEN is a non-traditional Yume Nikki-inspired game, where the player goes to sleep, fights enemies and collects "Dream Cores" but its optional and leads to multiple routes. Combat is a major part of the game with Riven encountering multiple enemies through the game and bosses. Each world features sub-locations and areas but the demo does not feature any effects.

''R1VEN'' tells a cruel yet quietly wholesome story about Riven, a hikikomori boy who treasures peace, familiarity, and the bonds he shares with his friends. These comforts manifest in his dream world, a vast and surreal world known as the Mindscape, where Riven and his companions Shika, Myniko, and Azuri spend their days exploring, talking, and facing strange phenomena together. Mindscape is a place shaped by Riven’s subconscious, reflecting both his desire to escape reality and his fear of losing what he holds dear.

However, this dream is not a refuge without consequence. Riven is unable to wake up from his lucid dreaming, and the world he inhabits is slowly approaching its end. Whispers and omens foretell the collapse of Mindscape, warning that its existence is threatened by powerful, hostile forces lurking deep within its layers. As the dream begins to decay, Riven is burdened with an impossible choice: remain in the false peace he loves, or confront the stronger forces and bosses that anchor the world’s suffering. To save Mindscape, and possibly himself, Riven must fight against the very dream that protects him, uncovering unsettling truths about his world, his friends, and what it truly means to escape an eternal dream.
