What do you think?

who remembers when pewds played this

Slender's Woods is a survival horror game developed by ZykovEddy and it's up on GameJolt. Basically, the game has you in a cabin, so you decide to go out for a walk. When you do, good ol' slendy flashes in front of you. Yeah, if you couldn't tell by the title, we're reviewing another Slender game. This game might not be that bad. So yeah, it starts off with you taking a really, nice....16-bit (It can be 32-bit, it lagged horribly at 32-bit) walk. I have to admit, a game being made on EDuke32 that runs way better and honestly still looks good in 16-bit is actually pretty good. I'm glad it ran better at 16-bit. There wasn't really a problem with it at 16-bit, and it still looked like it was 32-bit. It looked more 3D than what it'd be like on 16.

I thought the only problems with this game were that it's too short and the controls are not that great. E and LMB are to interact, F and RMB to turn on/off the flashlight..Obviously WASD to walk, and SHIFT to run...so you might not notice a problem here, right? Well...spoilers.. At the end, you get a gun... SPACE is to shoot the gun. I found it somewhat hard to try pressing SPACE with my hand on SHIFT or W. So yeah, that's the main problem. The other one, I felt like this game could've deserved another 30 minutes. It's too short, and I enjoyed the game for the most part. It's got a really interesting plot that I feel could've gotten, I don't know, an hour? I'd expect this game to be atleast one hour and 30 minutes.

The game was around 40 or 50 minutes I think. It's a short game but it's so fun and has, as I said, an interesting plot. Another problem I almost forgot was that the game sometimes lagged, even at 16-bit. It also bugged out a bit, when going around outside, a big wall of darkness would load right in front of you. The fourth problem is that, it was just too dark. It was so dark, in fact, that you could possibly get lost. Want to know what I did? I used the developer console to brighten up the game a bit. (r_ambientlight 10) Doing this, you could see the entire map, and the big black block would be even worse. The story is kind of boring, but atleast it has one. It's an alright story for the most part.

The music in this game is made by Aseptic Void. All the music in the game reminds me a bit like something Akira Yamaoka would make. The music is mostly giving off the feeling like someone is watching you or something. When the music played something creepy, I actually looked around behind me everytime a creepy song played in game. The music that plays when you go down the hatch around the beginning of the game. It gave off such a creepy feel after some loud noise played. It was almost something straight out of Silent Hill when you first get in there, it's just the sound of water dripping as a creepy noise plays in the background.

There is a part in the game where you need to type in a code, and the code is always randomly generated. I like that because you can't actually look up a guide for the game. It's really cool how many games do that actually. Although, at the segment where this happens, I didn't exactly know what to do until I found a thing on the wall that opened a door that requires a switch. I think that thing is a dead giveaway that the game uses EDuke32. Most doom clones, I never played Duke Nukem, so I don't know if it IS a Doom clone, but if it is, than most doom clones have a switch that opens a door, so yeah, that's a dead giveaway. I love this part of the game though, even though it takes about 5 minutes to finish if you know where to go and what to do. It's a really good segment either way.

Anyway, the gameplay is fine, and the puzzles are what I love about the game the most. Music is also a really high thing I like about this game. Honestly if I were to choose which is better, I'd actually..I might choose the music over puzzles. Some of the puzzles actually, they are really easy. I also think that the puzzles could use a bit more work and difficulty, but overall, I'm fine with it. Anyway that has been mostly everything, now lets get to the story.

I have to be honest, I haven't really read everything at the beginning but I'm guessing you're a person coping with your wife leaving you or something. Anyway, yeah, so you decide to go on a walk before getting stopped by the man we all know and love, Slenderman! You go back home only to find your door has been sealed with metal bars, which is a bit cliche, but anyway. There is a note that tells you to go west. You go west, and find a construction sight, you travel west a bit more to find another place and that place has the key to the place on the right side of the place. Anyway, you can go inside, and you are at my favorite part in the game, you go down the hatch and do the thing I mentioned a little bit above. After this, you travel to a mansion, and than you find clock hands, than you can just go down this thing and grab a hammer, than you go to the sawmill that is really close to your house. After this, you go down another hatch and than grab fuel from a room....I just realized how tedious this sounds, it kind of is, but it's easy to handle. Anyway, you grab fuel and put it in a generator I think, that's when you go into a room, you read a note telling you where a key is, after that, you immediately get jumpscared by slenderman, it actually got me, I flew back a bit when it happened ha ha. So you go to the place and grab a key, go back to the sawmill, go back in that hatch, and than you go down a hall and a ton of stuff just flashes right in front of you, than you go to a room where you find blood, go into this one room, and than grab the clip and gun, go out in the forest with a hatch, after all this, you just hunt slenderman, shoot him, it was kinda hard to do because looking at him can hurt you. After you think he's dead, you escape the forest but get jumpscared by a ton of other slendermen, you die here, and that's when the game ends. The story could use a bit of work, the game overall could use a bit of work. I actually kind of enjoyed the game. It's not that bad, anyway, lets get to the final score.

Final score: 75%

I gave it the 75 because it aged badly, and a ton of other things I said above that I don't feel like repeating because I'm tired and I just want to get this over with because I'm lazy and I'm sure this is the laziest review site on Earth. ANYWAY! Hope it helped a bit and gave you the idea to check out the game yourself because I actually recommend this game, I RECOMMEND A SLENDER GAME EVERYBODY! Anyway, hopefully you enjoyed, please come back tomorrow when I review a game that wants to be forgotten by the developer, I bet he's pissed if he's reading this... Anyway, cya everybody!

Slender's Woods is a short horror game about a mythical creature Slender man. Of course, the game is inspired by the famous Slender game by Parsec Productions, but it has a different type of gameplay. The Gamejolt release contains some fixes and extra polishing.

Important:Don't forget to read the list of tips before playing!

The development started a month after the original Slender game came out. One of the main reasons this game was made is to show a different atmosphere and gameplay done with the Slender man character. The goal is not to collect a certain amount of objects to win like in the most Slender tributes/clones. The game features two modes with different gameplay.

Tips (Please read before playing Story mode):

  • Don't look at the enemy for too long.

    • The more you play the game, the faster the enemy becomes.

    • The flashlight has a limited power, don't forget to collect batteries.

    • Sprinting causes your maximum stamina to drop slightly, especially in the Page collecting mode.

    • Don't forget to read the notes, they contain tips where you should go.

    • Try to remember the layout of the level and pay attention to the signs.

    • Story mode has checkpoints which allow you to save the game. To load the last game, simply access the Story mode menu section and select "load game" or hit "yes" on the continue screen.

    • Don't stop moving in the forest area after Slender man starts following you

    • Don't miss the key in the generator room in the underground tunnels

If you have any difficulties running the game, here's the things what you can do:

  • Update the video card drivers

    • Check if resolution is set to 32 bit at the setup screen

    • Run in windowed mode

    • choose different resolution

    • Re-install

Hope you'll enjoy the game.
