Somber Mind's in Life's Elation (otherwise read as "SMILE") is an adventure game in a dystopian setting. Inspired by such works as THX 1138 and 1984, the society of this world has place price tags on individual's very emotions and behavior. With the influence of corporate intruige, those with an inability to purchase soon fall in a physical inability to protest. No anger to have, unless it is purchased. No sorrow to have, unless it is purchased. No joy to have, unless it is purchased.
Players will take upon the role of Shermann, an ex-Combat Medic now assigned to civilian duties. He is tasked with monitoring clients who are either in exile, in asylum, under suspicion, or in abstinence from the authority and characteristics of their current society. However, mere walls could not resist the intrigue of their modern world. In a setting where there is a middle man between emotions and those who express them, it leaves a system that can easily be infiltrated and abused. There is reason to believe that someone capable of such a feat is among them. It is at this point that it is up to the player whether the path to resolution is one of control, panic, tolerance, or prejudice.
