As the Whispering Pines witnessed a series of mysterious disappearances, a creeping dread settled over the forest. Some say they saw shadows moving in the trees, others reported feeling watched by unseen eyes. But one thing was certain: something in the forest was getting stronger with each missing person.
When a group of skilled paranormal investigators is called in to unravel the mystery of the Whispering Pines, they quickly realize that they are not alone in the haunted forest. Girded with their paranormal investigation equipment, they set out to uncover the secrets of the cursed woods and the fate of the missing people.
As the team delves deeper into the mystery of the Whispering Pines, they will need all their skills and courage to survive the terrors that lurk in the shadows. But with each clue they uncover, they come closer to discovering the truth behind the disappearances and the sinister force at work in the forest.
As a paranormal investigator in The Devourer: Hunted Souls, you'll need all your skills and cunning to survive the haunted forest of Whispering Pines. Working together with up to 5 players in CO-OP vs AI, you'll explore multiple locations on a larger map and try to lift the curse that hangs over the woods. But be warned: this isn't just a game of hunter and prey. The ghosts and entities that haunt the forest have their own agendas, and you'll need to uncover their secrets to survive. With time running out, you'll need to decide whether to fight for your life or succumb to the forest's dark fate.
The Devourer: Hunted Souls takes paranormal investigation to the next level, immersing you in a world of survival horror and psychological terror. As you explore the Whispering Pines, you'll discover a story known only to a few, and uncover the truth behind the missing people of the forest. But beware: there may be more lurking in the shadows than the eye can see. Will you survive the haunted woods, or will you lose your soul to the darkness?
The Devourer: Hunted Souls began as a dream for us two brothers, both programmers from Germany in our mid/end-20s. Passionate about horror and gaming, we set out to create an experience that could be enjoyed together. With over a decade of programming experience and a deep understanding of multiple languages, we've spent the past few years honing our skills with Unreal Engine 4 and 5, until we were finally ready to start developing our dream game in the second half of 2022.
At the current state of the game we are confident enough to say we will release an Early Access version of the game mid in 2023 on Steam in any case since the project is constantly improving. The game has reached a Beta state in December 2022 and is in a great shape so far.
After the release of Unreal Engine 5, we saw a big chance to use its power to develop one of the first larger scale multiplayer indie horror games with high quality visuals. We also managed to include Unreal Engine’s MetaHuman characters as playable characters into the game and implemented modern technologies such as DLSS/TSR for improved performance. We are working hard to ensure as much quality as we possibly can, since we've set a high bar for ourselves.
You start off with some paranormal investigation gadgets and have one goal: find the source of the curse and if possible, lift it. However, Whispering Pines is filled with a variety of terrifying, lurking entities that won't hesitate to attack you.

The AI is acting in real time. You may not see what they are doing, but they will not only hunt you, but something else...

Find paranormal creatures / objects... or let them find you
You'll use a range of paranormal investigation gadgets to explore the cursed forest and uncover its secrets. From EMF readers to other high-tech equipment, you'll have everything you need to track down clues and gather information. As you investigate, you'll encounter a variety of creatures and objects that may help or hinder your progress. Your goal is to uncover the cause of the curse and try to lift it using any means at your disposal. We're taking paranormal investigation to the next level with a highly interactive world that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Death is not the end
When you die your soul is taken to another realm. Can you make it out before your fellow investigators die as well? Be prepared for unexpected events.
Play different characters with different abilities
You can choose from five unique investigators, each with their own skills and special abilities. Some excel at healing, while others are fast runners. Each investigator has a unique ability that can be useful in various situations. Learn more about the characters in the next section.
Look through your character's eyes
We have implemented a true first person camera perspective with a slight fisheye lens for a more immersive feeling. Motion Captured animations and a camera movement that is completely animation driven make each and every move look as realistic as it could be. Plus, with a variety of customization options available, you can adjust the camera and movement to suit your preference and avoid any motion sickness.
Experience an even more immersive horror game with Virtual Realty
We love playing horror games especially in VR. Our dream game would not be completed without the fullest immersion today's technology can offer. The game will have Virtual Reality support for those with strong nerves.
Full controller support
You want to play a horror game, but also you want to sit back while doing so? No problem! The game will offer a full controller support at the launch of Early Access. This is also a step towards a possible console port depending on the success of the game!
Integration of Epic Online Services - A step towards Cross-Platform Play
As of 26th January 2023, we have successfully integrated Epic Online Services as a first step towards Cross-Platform Play! The game is already listed on Steam, but if we can list our game in the Epic Game Store aswell, this will be a huge step for us as small indie developers since we could offer services that are only offered by bigger titles! If the game turns out to be popular enough, we want this to include Cross-Platform Play with the Playstation and XBOX consoles.
Our Inspirations
The game is inspired by other well-known first person horror titles as Outlast, Visage, Amnesia, Phasmophobia, Bigfoot, Monstrum, SCP: Containment Breach and more. Additionally, we are great fans of the universe Lovecraft hast created and we have written a backstory/story that is strongly inspired by the Cthulhu-Mythos. However, we would like to remain discrete regarding the influences. It is up to you to find things out.
Tau is an investigator that is physically in shape. He can run pretty fast and has a higher base durability and stamina. Use his special ability to fill his stamina back up and run as fast as you can.

Aurora grew up on the streets and became a very tough woman. She can handle a lot of damage. Her special ability makes her invincible for a short period of time which could save her life in crucial situations.

Hideyoshi may not seem like it, but he is a trained close combat fighter. He trained his senses to feel paranormals in his proximity making him very helpful for investigation tasks. His ability can show you any paranormal danger in your proximity.

Nasim always wanted to help people. That's why he worked hard to become a doctor. He knows how to use medicines right which increases his healing rate by a lot. However, his interest in the paranormal has made him a life saver. His special ability can heal other investigators.

Shannon has always been the quiet one. Most people don't notice her for most of the time. That being said, noises Shannon makes are less likely to be heard by beings in the forest leading to her being a quite sneaky investigator. Her special ability makes her unnoticable for other entities.
The EMF Reader is a well-known gadget for any paranormal investigator. This distance-based EMF Reader shows you how close you are to a signal. The gadget is best used in combination with the EMF Type Reader.

The EMF Type Reader shows you the type of the signal your EMF Reader receives. However, this gadget only shows the type if EMF Level 4 has been reached. You and a fellow investigator should have both EMF Reader gadgets equipped for maximum efficiency.

Not everything can be seen by the human eye. Both EMF Readers could detect something you may not see. The Thermal Detector visualizes paranormal changes to temperatures on its monitor. Find visible and invisible entities or objects with the Thermal Detector.
These are three investigative gadgets best used by three different investigators simultaneously to cooperate and coordinate the group. But be careful while choosing items, you can't carry everything!
As with other things we don't want to show every implemented item to keep things interesting. There are over 10 more items with different effects to be found. This number is very likely to increase.
Of course there is more we can not tell you without spoiling the investigation. We will keep the page up to date with further development. For now, the game supports German, English and Turkish languages. Sequels are not planned (yet), but if we are successful and the game turns out to be popular, we would like to keep our players happy with free additional content! However, this depends on the success of the project and wishes of a future playerbase.
