#Frustrating Foes: These are the Hardest Video Game Bosses Ever
We've all been there. You lose to the final boss for the 100th time and throw your controller at the TV. But who are the hardest video game bosses of all time?
Playing video games is one of the most popular ways to blow off steam, with almost half the population dabbling in them in their lifetime.
The challenge is part of what makes them so fun.
When you've been trying to beat a certain boss for hours, days, or even weeks, the feeling of finally winning is like no other.
In this post, we'll give you the run-down on the hardest video game bosses of all time. Read on for the most epic battles in all of gaming history.
The Hardest Video Game Bosses to Defeat
How many of them have you beaten?
1. Skolas, Destiny: House of Wolves
Destiny is notoriously addictive, but also difficult.
In attempts to get further through the game, players flocked to Reddit to share tips and tricks. When a player would get stuck in a rut, others would post comments about how to help them out of it.
These tips were never more needed than when players met Skolas, the final boss of Destiny 2: House of Wolves.
As a player, you encounter Skolas several times throughout the game. First, you see him on Venus. However, he manages to escape from your grasp to turn up again later in the Terminus.
Finally, he awaits you in the Prison of Elders. Here, you face your toughest challenge yet.
What makes this boss so difficult is the game's modifiers, which make his weapons so powerful that you can hardly compete.
As well as him, you also have to take on his army of 'fallen' aliens, all of which carry their own weapons.
One team managed to beat him in just 40 seconds, earning legendary status in the gaming community. Don't get your hopes up, though. Most players will have to spend much, much longer battling it out with him.
2. Boswer, Super Mario 64
Super Mario is a classic game that's loved by everyone, and the N64 version is no different.
Here, we once again see the age-old tale of Princess Peach being kidnapped by Bowser.
Somehow, we're not yet bored by the repetitive storyline, instead, getting sucked into the delightfully addictive gameplay.
You'll battle Bowser a few times throughout the game, but the third and final meeting is the most challenging. The fight takes place on a platform in the sky, which breaks apart as Bowser stomps down on it.
This means that while you're fighting and trying to dodge the fireballs coming from his mouth, you have to focus on jumping around to make sure that you don't inadvertently fall to your doom.
3. Mike Tyson - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!
Mike Tyson has a reputation for being one of the meanest fighters ever, so it's no surprise that his video game equivalent was a nasty opponent, too.
First of all, he's huge in comparison to you. It's like taking on Andre the Giant, but with insane speed and knock-out power. Thankfully, the pixelated version of him has no chance of biting your ear off.
To have a chance against Iron Mike Tyson, you have to have incredible timing and movement. Land the right punches at the right moments, and you can take the win. It's bound to take you more than a few rematches before you get there though.
4. Shao Kan, Mortal Kombat
Is there any better fighting game than Mortal Kombat?
The characters, the moves, and the awesome effects with blood and gore make it a firm favorite for gamers everywhere.
Of all the villainous opponents you're matched up with, Shao Kan, Emperor of Outworld is the most difficult.
With moves like the shadow charge, sledgehammer, fireball and powerful slam, he's incredibly hard to beat. You can try to block them, but he'll keep coming at you and chipping away at your health.
Worst of all, his super armor makes it hard to even make a dent in his health bar.
5. M Bison, Street Fighter II
If Mortal Kombat is the ultimate fighting game, Street Fighter is a close second.
M Bison is the most aggressive and powerful opponent you'll meet in Street Fighter II. His most devastating move is the psycho crusher, which he uses to charge at you, spinning head-first through the air.
To beat him, dodge his head stomps and time your fireballs just right. If you throw them too early, he'll take advantage of your lack of defensive and knock you out with a single combo.
Ultimecia, Final Fantasy VIII
With a seemingly endless list of games and spin-offs that have even been developed into movies, Final Fantasy is arguably the most popular gaming series ever.
Each game has its own challenges, but Ultimecia in the 13th issue is the hardest boss ever.
What makes her so hard to beat is the fact that she has four different forms that you have to fight. Each one is extremely difficult and takes long enough on its own, so the whole battle can seemingly last for an eternity. You'll need an insane amount of stamina for this one.
7. Ornstein and Smough - Dark Souls
If battling it out with one big boss wasn't enough, Dark Souls requires you to take on two at the same time.
Dragon Slayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough are a terrifying duo wielding spears and hammers. As well as swinging at you with their weapons, they'll attempt to crush you by leaping into the air and crashing down on you.
In order to win, you'll have to take on one at a time, deciding which one you're going to kill first before you even get started.
Ornstein is the faster of the two, and you'll have to be just as quick to dodge his attacks. Smough is slower, but his bigger size makes his attacks more devastating. Taking them both on and coming out alive takes a well-thought-out strategy and some serious patience.
8. Vergil - Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening
In third-person shooter Devil May Cry, you'll enjoy destroying numerous evil demons as main character Dante. However, in Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, these fights become much more complicated.
That's because you have to face-off with your character's twin brother, Vergil.
Vergil's on a quest to obtain the extreme level of demonic power that his father, and yours, once had. It's your job to stop him.
The first time you have to fight him, his speed can be overwhelming. The second time, he surprised you by using his teleportation abilities, coupled with even more powerful attacks.
They're so strong that even just one hit can kill you.
Still, this isn't enough to prepare you for the third and final fight. Here, things get even more difficult.
As well as his previous attacks, he'll also start to attack from above, dropping down and aiming his sword right for your head. Any damage you do is short-lived because he keeps regenerating back to full health.
The real challenge is to keep attacking him while stopping him from regenerating his health at the same time. If you can do that without throwing down your controller in frustration, you deserve a prize.
9. Death Egg Robot, Sonic the Hedgehog 2
You might be surprised to see a game as simple as Sonic the Hedgehog! on a list with other much more complex and sinister offerings. However, there are some surprisingly difficult battles to face.
The worst one is the final match-up with Dr. Eggman in the Death Egg Zone.
In all your previous battles, you could pick up some rings to help you get your health back up just enough to beat him. No matter how many times you got hit, there was a chance to come back strong.
Here, that's not the case. In the Death Egg Zone, there are no rings to help you.
This means that the stakes are much higher and it's much more difficult to survive.
10. Nameless King, Dark Souls 3
Dark Souls has such epic boss battles that it's worth mentioning twice on this list. In the third version of the game, things get even more serious.
Nameless King is the worst of all of the Dark Souls 3 Bosses!, for various reasons.
Since he's riding on the back of a gigantic dragon, beating him seems an impossible feat when you're armed with just a sword and a shield. However, if you stick at it, it's possible.
When the dragon breathes fire in your direction, roll through the flames and use your sword to attack it from the other side. Keep attacking the head, and you'll eventually defeat it.
Then, it's just you and the Nameless King himself.
He'll swipe and stab at you, attempting to kill you off with powerful lightning strikes. If you survive, you'll have to keep up some impeccable timing to dodge his attacks and throw your own back in just the right way.
Then, just when you think you're winning, he'll pull some brand new moves out of the bag.
Gaming is a Team Effort
If you're struggling with some of the hardest video game bosses in the business, you need a little help from your friends.
When you've tried it on your own a hundred times, things can get incredibly frustrating. That's why you should ask other gamers for help.
They can help you with tips, tricks, and strategies. At the very least, they'll sympathize with your frustrations and give you a chance to vent.
