A Long-Overdue Update - New Fangame, Old Stories, And 'The Update'

"Where in the world is Mayhem Sandiego?"

Hi! I'm sorry for the radio silence. I've been... overwhelmed.

I've been very busy as of late, and life hasn't been kind to me either. I've started college this year—and I'm already in the process of changing my major, because this goblin can't pick what they want to do.

Also, my health has gotten so much worse in ways I had no way of expecting. I've been dealing with chronic illness all year, and I've had absolutely no energy—and the little bits of energy I do have, I must use to study.

But that's enough about me. Back to the topic at hand.

TL;DR

There'll be a TL;DR (a summary) at the bottom for those who don't want to read all of this!

"What'll happen to this fangame?"

I hear you, I hear you. Don't worry, I have plans!

... But I feel I must also talk about the elephant in the room.

I'm not happy with the fangame. Like, at all.

This was my first project in this scale, back when I had just turned 18 and was very dumb, and now looking back on it I've got so much to say, oh god. The art. The battles. Most of it irks me now and I wanna change all of it.

But that's not the biggest issue.

The biggest issue is the way the fangame is structured. You see, I used an engine called GDevelop to make this, and it was younger me's first time working with something like it to make an actual, full fangame.

And you see: It's done terribly.

So bad it's actually hard to go back and edit, because of how poorly glued together everything is. It's glitchy, it's slow, it's illogical—this being the biggest issue. Younger me was very bad with programming logic, and even when using an engine that basically gave me everything on a plate ready to use, you still have to have at least some grasp of logic. But I didn't.

To put it simply:

It's a lot of work to go and fix everything. A lot.

"... Does this mean you won't do it?"

... No, I will. I want to.

I will still go back and fix as much of it as I can, and work on a big update as I'd planned. I'll be happy to do it, and I'll be able to work on it much more when this semester of college is over—and even before that, I've already started fixing things.

But I have something else I want to do at the same time.

New Projects, And What's Coming

So, for those who don't know, in this time I've been gone, I've actually been working on smaller practice projects on Itch.io!

And for those who wanna see them:

https://mayhemcats.itch.io/

And it actually proved to be very helpful. I heavily advise you all to do that. Game jams are fun, and really help you learn! Even for a gremlin like me, who has a very, very, veeery long way to go.

Anyway, all of my Itch.io projects are game jam stuff and very small/silly, but they've been good practice. And I think after a whole two years, I feel more ready to tackle a new project; at least I think so. I could be wrong. Uhm.

And with the release of Deltarune Chapter 2—my inspiration is right back to full. I've been thinking of so many ideas, and picking which one I want to do; and I haven't decided yet, but you can expect a new project soon!

A few important things, however:

  1. The new project will also be a Deltarune fangame, but it'll be unrelated to this one. Yes, I know. I'm sorry. I might change my mind if enough people want me to continue this, though. My ideas have gone a completely different direction, however, and I'm sorry!

  2. The new project will most likely be a little smaller than this one in sheer time, but still at least comparatively in the same 'size category'.

  3. And a thing I've been wanting to say: I think for the new project and the continuation of this one, I'm warming up to the idea of collaboration?

And I feel I gotta talk about the last bullet a bit more!

A Socially Anxious Gremlin Slightly Considers Collaboration

So, full disclosure: I've always been very socially anxious, and I always work alone because of it.

I'm shy and bad at talking to people, and, therefore, very bad at working with people. I think college has started to change that on me, however, at least a little bit.

I'm still not comfortable with the idea of splitting a project of mine entirely with someone, but—if anyone would like to help me with either this project (Lonerune) or a new project I'm working on—feel free to DM me and we can talk, and I'd be very grateful! Expect me to draw you some things on top for your kindness and all!

And another thing:

I'm much more likely to be comfortable working with you if I already have you on Discord! If we have each other on there, feel free to message me anytime!

I'm just very socially anxious and I'm really sorry. You can still message me otherwise, though! I'd still be down to chat.

Also: Please don't contact me if you're a minor. Thank you!

Anyway; my Discord is [Sorry, I'm removing it for now]!

TL;DR: A Summary

So, to summarize:

  1. Life has been bad and I'm sorry I haven't been working on things.

  2. Lonerune update coming soon. Will have to fix A LOT of awfully-structured event sheets. Berdly is completely right to shame me there.

  3. I'm working on a new Deltarune fangame now that Ch2 is out, which I'll share more info about soon! But no, it's not related to this one.

  4. I'm accepting collaboration maybe perhaps mayhaps I'm not sure yet! (Read that section before asking, please!)

Anyway, that's about it!

Thank you for reading! I'll be posting more updates soon!

Next up

I'm working on finishing up the demo, and I wanted to make an update! It's close to completion. I plan on finishing it up in the next two weeks. I'll also update it as I make progress. I'm trying to get to a point where I won't need to make changes.

Lonerune Demo v1.0 has finally been released! I apologize in advance for any glitches you may come across, or for any snappy or laggy parts in it. I'd love any bit of feedback! I'm also gonna be updating the previews in the PORTFOLIO too!

I've been working on cutscenes lately, finally putting my ideas into the canvas. The game is not going to be THAT art-heavy, but I'm a sucker for cutscenes. A WIP of a thing, part of a cutscene. I still need to polish a lot more though.

I'm eager to announce the game is very close to completion! I might need another week to polish some of the rough edges, but I'm very optimistic about releasing it very soon! Thank you so much for waiting!

It's been a while since the last update. I've been working on the maps and the story the most lately!

It will still take a while for the game to be completed; but not too long, hopefully. It's going steady! Thanks a lot everyone for the feedback so far!

Lonerune has finally been released in its FULL version!

I'm so happy to finally release this fangame! I'd love some feedback! If you find any glitches, please let me know! Yay!

I'm gonna need a bit more time to finish up the Demo. I know I said it'd be done in around two weeks - two weeks ago - but I'm trying to amp up the quality in the animated cutscenes. I'm gonna set up a better deadline - but it'll be soon, no worries!

Update: The DEMO of Lonerune is finally going to be released this weekend! I'm adding the final touches and packing everything. It should be out sometime around this weekend - hopefully with no more delays. I'll post more updates as it goes!

Chiaki Nanami!
