Well, that was quick. sigh
It’s only been two days since the BIDIMEN demo was made public, but a number of (thankfully all minor) issues have already been reported. So, I’ve just uploaded a new build that should fix all those problems! Here’s what has been changed:
The intro sequence can be skipped by pressing Enter. Probably the most meaningful of these changes, as I’m pretty sure there are plenty of players who are interested only in the gameplay - this IS a platformer, after all. So, if you don’t feel like sitting through five minutes of dialogue, just hit Enter and get straight to the action :P
Key mapping works better now. In the previous version, you had to press the A key to advance text even if you had assigned that function to another key in the main menu. Now you can press whatever you want to.
Now there’s a door to a save point on the very first room of the game. Before, you could go back to Andy’s room and save the game there, but since the intro sequence basically shows him getting the hell outta there, it could easily go unnoticed. Now the door to the save room is literally in front of you as soon as you gain control of Andy.
More hint messages were added. Apparently, the game wasn’t clear enough at the beginning. There’s a lot of stuff you have to do (slide by pressing down twice) and not to do (fight enemies while your hands are blocky, try to interact with the giant barriers early on) that I expected players to figure out on their own, but… apparently, those things aren’t as obvious as I thought. So, I added a couple more messages so people won’t get stuck literally two minutes into the game.
Some enemies and spikes were moved around. Namely, the Hungry Hand below the “don’t fight” message on the wall, which was too close to the edge of the room, and the second set of spikes you encounter, which could result in a surprise kill if you were not extremely careful.
The stairs are still a pain, but less so now. I made them more like ramps, so they feel less clunky to go up… but you still have to hold down and press the JUMP key to drop down. I hope no one gets stuck on that part…
So, I guess that’s all. For those of you who had already played the game before the updates, you should have a much better experience now. And for those who haven’t played the game yet, now is the perfect time to give it a try!
