Day 109: Today I still didn’t code. I feel like the longer I go without coding the less productive I am. Now everything seems insurmountable. But when I’m knee deep with game systems, I don’t have time to worry (too much). I really long for this project to be over. I need to get a job where I’ll be able to focus on what I do best (and also have code reviews).
Daily interesting stuff:
Reddit post, “how important are graphics to you?”. Interesting discussion.
Huge list of game resources. Ranging from Game engines to free music.
Tasks done:
Checked reddit. It turns out that I had two more responses from my ad for a graphist. Also the first person didn’t respond to my message yet. I find this whole search stressing. I have at the same time to work on it, and guess if the person contacting me could actually do something cool.
Responded to the messages. Something generic, answering questions, and saying that I’ll send an asset list soon.
Worked on an asset list. I thought it wouldn’t take long. It actually took most of the day. Just listing things in broad strokes is easy. Explaining my vision on everything isn’t. I have a 5 page document to explain the assets I need the best I can. This includes listing all the enemies and their characteristics. And a lot of other stuff from a bunch of design docs. This was really a boring task. But at least I think it helped get a more global vision about the game. Which is always a good thing. After that, I also did a google sheet list of assets, in a more succinct way.
Finally watched the gdc vault video about portfolios. It was really good. Even if a bit of it is outdated (feels weird to see screenshot of popular site from 6 years ago). One thing that I don’t do as advised is the game genre specialization. I don’t really want to work in a particular genre, so I don’t think it makes sense to work only on project for this genre.
Planned the next sprint. I looked at the beta draft document. Which is horrible BTW. And tried to group things in a sprint. It was difficult because I didn’t see similar tasks. And each tasks by itself wasn’t big enough to constitute a sprint. So I said “fuck it” and went for a three week long “technical sprint”. I liked the idea because it was simple, and it means that I’ll have only three sprint for the beta: “technical”, “content”, and “polish”.
Right now I’m going for some grocery shopping, because tonight it’s “raclette” and I need to buy some charcuterie (can’t believe you don’t have your own word for it). After this I’m going to send the asset list and description to the artists.
