The upcoming 1.10.0 release comes with a new Decay subsystem, which is a quite handy piece of code that the game physics may use to weaken and decay physical objects.
The first use of this new subsystem is rotting, a new feature thanks to which a wreck that has been engulfed by water will rot overtime.
Here is a screenshot of the RMS Titanic after it has just sank to the bottom of the ocean (with water contrast set to zero)

16 minutes later the iron-eating bacteria are in full activity, and parts of the wreck have collapsed under their own weight:

No more dull wrecks then - you may now enjoy time passing by even after your ship has sunk to the bottom of the ocean!
