Unsurprisingly, Varnurud is home to many settlements, fastnesses, and facilities once occupied by Dwarves and their Inventor Kings during the last centuries of the Third Age of the Riven Realms. Since mines were common, so too were satellite towns, of which Ember Town is one.

This settlement in particular was connected to the Ember Mines, and the Dwarves who worked in those mines lived here with their families, larger as they were when the Dwarves themselves had a very different outlook on life. The centuries – more than a millennium, in fact – that have passed since the Calamity have not been kind to Ember Town, however. Aside from losing its original name – which was once undoubtedly of a suitably Dwarven origin – the town is now a most unpleasant ruin. Sweltering heat encroaches from all sides, swelling in the lava deltas that intersect with the ruins that still linger here. Undead of a peculiar, fiery origin seem to come out of the ground in great hordes, as if growing in the bowels of the earth.

Add the fact that crazed scavenger gangs have made a habit of rummaging through it, and you have a real hazard, one that most intelligent travelers would rather avoid. But the scavengers who frequent the place don’t come here for no reason at all. They understand what lies beneath the ruins here, and while they often die trying to recover it, they’re not ones to give up. Madness will do that to you, they say.

What about you, vagrus? Will you try your luck in what is today called “Ember Town”? Naturally, there are rumors about treasures in those depths. Is that true? One thing’s for sure: there’s enough danger and death to go around.
