DLC Location Artwork - The Great Stairs

What makes a great set of stairs, you might ask? Well, that’s a tough question, we say. In our At the Heart of Ruin expansion, there are many sets of great stairs, but only one is called the Great Stairs – at least that’s what the locals would say. Whether those locals are bloodletting miscreants who worship an unknown entity that demands depraved sacrifice, madmen who delight in the act of burning themselves and others alive, or men who believe themselves to be beasts after discovering a dead Wyvern that they thought was a divine creature of the skies, that’s what they would say. There are other… more cultured locals, of course – even ones that’ll talk to you – but they each share a different brand of insanity. Enjoy, we say.

Back to the Great Stairs. Hewn into the side of the rocky mountainside and wide enough for many to traverse, they are said to be miles and miles long. They used to climb high into the valleys and peaks that stretch beyond Varnurud’s western reaches, but the long centuries have not been kind to them. Thus, neglect has taken its toll – as have movements of the earth – and so the Great Stairs are mostly ruined.

Aside from the glorious statues of Dwarven figures of an age now lost to the Calamity, there’s a plaque somewhere in there, too. Inscribed are the mysterious words “Stairs of Baldar”, yet unfortunately, no living soul knows just who this particular Baldar was. Some say the stairs are still scalable; they just require immense climbing prowess and tools that few possess.

With that, we must bid you farewell for now, so we will say as we always do: stay awesome, stay inquisitive, and conquer the wasteland!
