Here’s an introduction to the Dodge Cancel Ability.

It’s possible to dodge while staying hooked to a titan. However, you will find that by default, there’s a small delay before you can reel again after a dodge. That’s enough time for a reactive titan to face you again and therefore make you unable to reach his nape in time.

Performing a dodge cancel will allow you to overtake the titan, by overriding this small delay. To do that, press Ctrl (by default) just after the character has blinked in blue. If you’re quick enough, you might be able to reach the nape before the titan has time to react.
Just remember that Dodge Cancel put some stress on your gear
