Everything you need to know about FNaF 2: Reconstructed - Story Guide

TW: SUBSTANCE ABUSE, ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

Hello, everyone! Co-Director, Co-Writer and V/A here!
I felt that making this post was necessary, given the most recent draft I turned in to Fran. As of Wednesday, the latest draft for FNaF 2: Reconstructed was turned in, which is, hopefully, the final one.
To those concerned about the radical changes it could make on the game.. do not worry, our current focus is on the gameplay aspects and not the cutscenes or story beats. We were reserving that for until we had a proper final draft finished, which we have now.
Given how little you guys know about the plot of the game as a whole, I really felt I had to make this post to give you guys a better idea of what's in store for the story of this game, and other possible Reconstructed-related projects.

WHAT IS THE STORY ABOUT?

January, 2006. It’s been sixteen years since the shutdown of the previous Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. What once was a celebrated pizzeria chain worldwide has now turned into a desolate silhouette of the human memory. However, the announcement of the Fazbear IP being lended to a new corporate entity has opened the eyes of public intrigue, wanting to see how Freddy and his Friends could be resurrected and redeemed.

However, instead of success, tragedy knocks on the pizzeria’s doors.

Play through the eyes of Fred Miller, a recent college graduate undergoing a tragic loss. Looking for something to distract yourself, you take up the offer of the job at the night watch at the brand new Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. However, to your misfortune, you see that things aren’t as they were once said in the newspapers.

Nothing is as it seems, and you soon realize that you can trust no one.

Obviously, that is just the public synopsis. However, I can tell you people quite a lot of details on the game, including characters, themes and even potential story beats!

In our current draft, we have taken an approach ala Silent Hill, in which we follow an incredibly damaged person who stumbles across Freddy Fazbear's Pizza for one reason or another. Fred will be depicted as a college dropout, one who has developed an addiction to several substances and has fallen into a very deep and intense cycle of depression. However, Fred is put in a situation which forces him in a position unlike anything he's seen before - one in which not only his mental health is put into question, but his friends'.

Yes, the story is set to deal with the very real horror story that is to suffer from drug addiction and depression. Our goal is to shed light on this problem that has begun to affect the next generations of young men and women. It is my belief that the best way to shed light on a situation to a large audience is through the entertainment industry, and we will be tackling this issue (with respect, of course) and showcase the real and horrifying nature of said issue, along with several other issues (which I will not speak of. Play the game yourselves to find out!)

In a way, this game is similar to Silent Hill 3 in terms of how it plans to tackle its major themes. I'd say that's the best example of how we plan on showcasing said themes. If any of you want some sort of reference to how the story will progress and its overall tone, i'd say the tone matches the likes of Beautiful Boy, whilst the story itself has similar elements to the first two seasons of Stranger Things.

I have honestly never quite seen a story like Reconstructed's in the fangame space. I usually only see half baked stories, with half baked characters and half baked themes. Reconstructed is planning on going all out with themes and commentary about several problems plaguing our generation, whilst also introducing a very compelling plotline and protagonist in the form of Fred Miller and his friend group.

FAQ

Below, I will be answering several questions asked in the comments of a post in which I talked about the possibility of making this very post and questions from the discord server. (Note, these are only story-related questions, and not graphical questions or gameplay questions. I have decided to re-answer the discord Q&A questions given the current draft)

[@TheLegend87 ] - Will the game follow the original story of FNaF 2, or will it follow a new continuity?

Entirely different story. Core elements may be intact, but the story is largely completely different and original. From characters, to the themes, to the overall genre of horror, too. Its very, very different.

[@mimic_program_one ] - Is there going to be a boss fight?

Though there were no immediate plans for a boss fight at first, it was decided to pay off the game with a climactic finale featuring a boss fight. Who or what this boss fight is will not be revealed until the game launches. Here's a hint, though...its a character that has appeared in an early FNaF game which is NOT FNaF 2.

[SirCoconut] - How long can you guess the game will take to beat or 100% compared to original fnaf 2?

FNaF 2's main campaign contains an overall runtime of 42 minutes. With that information in mind, I suspect the game could take either 1h 15m to 1h 30m to complete. No longer than two hours...we're not Jolly 4.

[SirCoconut] - How much lore is the same? Is fnaf 1 lore the same does it still go to fnaf 4 and fnaf 3? Also is the building still a rebranded Fredbear’s family diner?

The building is not a rebranded Fredbear's Family Diner in this version of the story. Although certain elements from the past lore have been put into the game, each significant event has been reimagined through some shape or form.

[@TheLegend87 ] - Will the game reveal who is responsible for the Bite of '87, or will it not be relevant to the story?
The Bite is an event that is EXTREMLEY relevant to the story, even if the "who" is largely unimportant. So, yes, it will answer some questions regarding The Bite.

[RoFOmn] - Will the shadows be characters that are no longer secret?

We may or may not add the Shadows, but it wouldn't make any difference as they are not important to the story.

CONCLUSION

Me and @AverageFranDev genuinely could not be happier about the direction that FNaF 2: Reconstructed is headed towards. Its shaping up to be more than just a FNaF 2 reskin...its shaping up to be probably one of the most personal and character-driven games the community has ever seen. I love that this game is not afraid to tell people to wake the fuck up - because, in the end, that's what my objective is as a writer...to force people to confront harsh realities that others seem to ignore.
I hope you are all as excited as we are because of the new tidbits we've shared on the story of FNaF 2: Reconstructed...we absolutely cannot wait to finish this project, and we are more than grateful for your support! If you have any additional questions, be sure to ask (as long as they are story related).

Have an excellent day, ladies and gentlemen! Stay safe :))

I usually don’t do shoutouts, but this is an exception given that it’s from a friend I’ve known for a while.
