FinLab 1.1.0 (Time & Temp) is here! This update brings a more mechanically deep experience, changes to the core loop, some fixes/changes + some more fish and decor, there is a LOT so here is the full changelog below:

Major Features:

  • Random breeding chance - If your tank is not max population and you have at least two of the same species (no cross breeding) they may lay an egg

  • Egg raising - the environment your egg is in can alter the genetics of the generation, you also have a handful of egg slots in which you can remove eggs from the tank and pause time. Want to breed a cold fish into a highly valuable warm temp fish? You can!

  • Genetics system - Each species has a base gene, and generation count. Every egg that is bred appends gradually to the parent gene, and when the egg is born the entire species inherits the attributes, even if they leave the tank (no progress lost). Be warned, environments the eggs are in can create a liking to factors or potentially cause aversion.

  • Time of day - There is now an in game clock, at 12:00 AM every day stock and the market will refresh, and daily weather is applied.

  • Seasons - Seasons is another big factor in this update, each season includes it's realistic weather patterns, several holidays, and environmental temperature.

  • Weather - Weather has visuals and also affects the temperature. There is a predetermined monthly forecast so you can plan

  • New UIs: Egg Manager and Calendar - Calendar lets you view the forecast, holidays, and days/current day in the month. The egg manager allows you to see timers on eggs and set eggs to inactive for storage.

  • Holidays - Holidays will have passive buffs for that day, occasional unlockables, and more. There's holidays such as Tiny Fin Festival which includes higher breeding changes/egg progress, to Blood Moon's Eve where spooky and evil fish thrive, and much more!

  • Tank Temperature/Fish Temps - Each fish species has a desired temp range (this can be bred out as well), and you will have a daily utility bill for temperature management on your tank. You can set manually this but it will drift to the environment neutral (weather + season)

  • New fish that range from a knight and wizard fish, to seasonal candy cane fish and Santa fish

  • A new water type Jollywater, a snow-like water that brings out the winter spirit

  • New decor unlockables including but not limited to coral, treasure chests, and more

Minor Changes

  • Fixed a minor typo in the Encylopedia

  • Removed a debug command left in release

  • Added camera speed controls (this saves too)

  • Lowered camera speed intensity

  • A minimal save data system to your GameJolt account so you can continue your game later with your species genes, unlocked content, and current time/day

  • Fish now have a fixed stock (except free fish) calculated per day at 12:00AM

  • Each species has a per-day market saturation stat. Selling many of the same fish can cause oversaturation and less income all the way to 0. This is reset every day at 12:00AM. This stat is visible when your species in the tank noted by a $ icon.

  • Each fish has it's desired temp range (based on it's genetics) which shows it's average required temp.

  • Fixed a slider in the build items being the wrong image

  • Fixed the horizontal slider appearing in build items

  • Fish can unlock hidden markings and patterns based on their genetics and gene strength.

I worked really hard getting this update out so please enjoy! By the way, I was having issues getting this to run on Firefox (my primary browser) but I believe I fixed it. Let me know if there's still issues though.

I have released a major update for my fish simulation/tycoon game FinLab! It includes a deep breeding system, a time of day, yearly calendar, holidays, and more. It's out now for free on WebGL!

I went off the radar recently because I sorta burnt out on the collectathon. I've been working on a smaller game concept. I've kept it pretty silent because I'm not sure it'll work. It's a long distance road trip simulator game where you deliver packages.

Sorry for the spam lol but one more thing, snow visuals are improved. Including a slight frosted glass effect and way more dense snow. Winters are very snowy in FinLab! Snowstorms can last days.

đŸ§ªTesting a new feature, tank temps! Fish now have a desired temp range. This is user controlled but a) the more extreme the more expensive the daily bill is, and b) it will slowly drift to the environmental neutral (affected by season and weather).

Been running some art style experiments. I kinda wanted the sprites to pop a bit more and blend easier, as well as going back to my original vision for the game. So trying 4:3 + CRT shader + some pixelization + sprite outlines. I need to test it on Linux.

Incredibly rough proof of concept for a racing minigame (Chao garden-like). I'm prototyping seasonal minigames which may net you unique rewards. Breeding also matters a lot here, higher breeding level = faster fish. Made in about 2 hours.

By winning races, you will earn a new currency called sea dollars. You can spend this currency to unlock a random novelty duck (no duplicates). These are new decor items that count to 100%

Working on music and some background flair for my level in my game. In this level you explore underwater domes and glass pipes on the sea floor, with a neon bioluminescent aesthetic.

Doing this silly feature to go along with my Y2K aesthetic. I'm making a fake internet for the game that also serves as an in-universe guide. The writing is terrible, I binged this feature in like 2 hours with the stomach flu.

Steam Deck! Running on the LCD model but should run on the OLED just fine.
