We love sharing peeks into the development of Simulacrum but that comes with a few issues for us, namely, spoilers. Since we are just a team of two people working on what is effectively a passion project, we are not able to keep up with the demand of an update each month without showing too much. There’s just not enough stuff building in our backlog to keep most of the game a surprise. We feel that Simulacrum is the type of game that is best experienced as blindly as possible and so this is a problem for us. That first time experience is really special and seeing the majority of the environments and puzzles beforehand spoils that.
There is also a lot of pressure to make these monthly updates, to have something tangible and exciting to share. This pressure ends up affecting productivity as it takes a toll on mental health. This is a major reason we are making the tough choice to stop our regular updates.
Our plan is to share updates when we are ready and comfortable, just not on an expected schedule of once per month. They’ll be a surprise, just like we want most of the game to be. Yes, unfortunately it means you’ll see less of Simulacrum before it’s out. But it also means we can get our heads down and focus on the development with less stress and get it done a bit quicker.
