This overhaul to caves and the large rooms has been something that I've been wanting to add to the game for a long time, but it took me quite a while to get it working right.
In the current version, when the player encounters an area with a entrance to the cave, the next portal will automatically lead them to said cave. This didn't make a lot of sense (why would I need a portal if the entrance is right next to me?) and also took away any choice for the player. In the coming update, caves are completely optional. If you want to go in and see what's in there, do it. If you don't care then you are free to skip it.
There's still a chance that the entrance will lead to the regular 1 screen sized cave room, but now there's also a chance to enter a vault room or one of the new larger rooms. If the entrance is going to lead to a larger or special room however, the player will receive some sort of warning. You can see this in the video where a guard warns the player of the threat within the cave.
What's also different about these larger cave rooms is that you don't have to defeat all the enemies to leave/progress. The portal to leave is always there and if things aren't looking good or you just want to get out, you can. Aside from the main portal there are sometimes other options that the player has, openings that go to different sections of the cave. This can lead to a boss, chests, a special shop and other content, again indicated with a warning if it's extra dangerous.
