Plans for the future and an epiphany I had...

So this dude did a livestream of A Postmortem Nation since I had recently started up an itch.io account and had put up this, Tales of Your and an RPGM Touhou character pack as a sort of test to see what I could do there and I will get to my reasons later but this livestream.

This dude who played my game gave me some constructive criticism on what I do for game development and it boiled down to stop using defaults as I had been using default transfer SFX, fonts, classes and such as part of a development strategy that I had since moved on from where I try to make games as fast as possible before I lose attention and interest in the project. As this was the first criticism of my games in years it got me thinking, had I stagnated?

I had essentially been making RPG games for about nine years now on Gamejolt and while each project taught me something new or at the very least involved me trying new things. Because of my overuse of default assets and classes and such, I felt like as different as I try to make them, they all are the same, same graphics, same gameplay. Its because of this, wish I was given more feedback on game development earlier but because no one plays my games no one told me what I could do differently or what had failed or what had succeeded, outside from people I've met in the community here and elsewhere. This leads me to why I mentioned the Itch.io account I had created.

As much as people talk about leaving Gamejolt to the point that it has become a meme in my post feed. I am considering leaving Gamejolt, I had created an Itch.io account and posted two games as a way to test the waters before making a decision. I have plans and infrastructure in place to move to Itch.io for a couple of reasons.

  1. Gamejolt has become more of a social media platform than a semi-serious place for people to develop games for.

  2. Due to the sheer size of the Undertale and FNAF communities, it has become harder for original projects to gain traction and because I'm not a fancy "Jack of all trades" indie developer with a fancy Kickstarter or Patreon with a fancy studio of hardworking employees, getting original projects going with enough fanfare is problematic and while the same could be said about Itch.io, at least on Itch.io I can compete with other people's original works as opposed to the Titanic FNAF/Undertale projects.

  3. I need to find a new place to a make a fresh start to build a new community based around my work and not smash my head against pre-existing ones.

  4. I just want a new platform.

However I will not be leaving Gamejolt just yet as I will wait until after Fursona is complete to make a final decision and if my fortunes on Gamejolt reverse to the point where I feel like the time I put into my work is valid. Also I had an epiphany in which if no one plays my games why add so many sidequests? So I will consider working on smaller projects with thinner amounts of content as I feel burnt out on making so many samey feeling sidequests all the time.

In conclusion, I will be reconsidering my position on this site in the coming future and I have already put in place the infrastructure to do so. But if I feel like I should stay then I will.

I will also try to do better for making my RPGM games better and so I will have to embark on an adventure to "Git Gud".
