Good evening Lauren & Gamejolt!
We're the core team of Mystery Egg Games, creating "Hero.EXE"!
Q: So what's your game all about?
1. Hero.EXE is kind of a love letter to the old Megaman Battle Network games-- mixed with Visual Novel flare, varied combat mechanics, and all the Saturday morning anime we can possibly squeeze in! Focused on an alternate reality's internet, the player guides "AVA"s through "The Grid" and solves what's really going on in the cyberspace throughout the story.
Q: What inspired you to make this game?
2. Dale: Playing megaman battle network as a kid. Me and my friend would go camping and we'd keep in a seperate tent just to play MMBN!
Kat: We also wanted to fill a niche that felt empty since the MMBN series ended-- One Step From Eden started around the same time, haha!
Q: What's the most challenging part of making your game?
3. Group: Making the separate campaigns for 4 characters.
Tak: Getting everyone on the same page when we're all working remotely over mostly asynchronous comms is occasionally a bit tricky.
Kat: Also timezones; that's a particularly difficult hurdle across the globe!
Q: What are your goals in the game industry?
4. Dale: I want to make games that I'd enjoy playing.
Tak: Same for me, I just want to be able to support myself making games that I'd love to play myself.
Kat: Also ditto-- I did want to eventually make a particular "grocery shopping" type game that got shelved... aside from that, I just really wanna make cute characters actualized and see people enjoying them!
Q: What game inspired you most growing up?
5. Dale: Custom Robo. I really love being the protagonist of a toy anime!
Tak. Unreal Tournament 2004. It was an amazing game in its own right (probably still one of the best arena FPSes of all time). It was also easily moddable and helped to keep the game's community active for years, in addition to launching several modders' careers into professional gamedev.
Kat: Paper Mario! I loved how the characters seemingly popped against their environment-- I wanted to make something just as fun and colorful!
Q: If you could give any advice to anybody that wants to make their own game, what would it be?
6. Dale: The hardest part is not quitting.
Tak: If you are truly dedicated to making games you'll need to not be easily discouraged. You'll run into lots of potential partners that will end up not putting in the work or just aren't motivated, the best thing you can do is keep marching forward regardless.
Kat: Start small; verrrrrry baby steps. Make a character move, and go to the next step from there. Seeing the smaller picture happen is much more motivating than failing to realize a much larger one; feel gratitude towards yourself in what you're able to accomplish. Scope is not your friend-- your working game is. Build off what you've already done!
Q: Where can people find you and your game?
