I'm back again sitting down with devs and asking juicy questions about their games! This week I talk to the studio behind Phaseshift!
1. So what's your game all about? My game is a cyberpunk inspired combat racer called Phaseshift. You drive a heavily armed, two-wheeled vehicle across a variety of terrain and landscapes. The idea is to race, destroy and survive! Each bike is highly customisable: you manage your racing team including your teammate, team liveries, weapon loadouts and more!
2. What inspired you to make this game? This game has been in my mind since I was a kid, since playing 90/00s combat racers on the PS1, I really wanted to make my own! The game Firebugs (basically Rollcage 3) was the main inspiration for Phaseshift, I loved the environments, the vibrant colours and feel of the entire game. Future Cop LAPD was also a massive inspiration; was amazed by the carnage of having three weapon banks and being able to customise them. Transforming into a hovercraft was awesome, and there was a really fun additional arena style game mode. I’ve also always been a massive F1 fan and wanted to incorporate the same sorts of characters, teams, rivalries and aesthetic as you see in the sport. The story mode will see you build relationships according to your on-track antics, and certain opportunities may arise depending on your choices! Since then everything I’ve played has been an inspiration, Unreal Tournament, Deus Ex, Mass Effect etc!
3. What's the most challenging part of making your game? I think it always depends on your skill set, and for me it has to be the 3D art. Making rich 3D environments that are performant and fit the theme of the track and look great even when going 270+mph is a challenge!
4. What are your goals in the game industry? I would love to build a career for myself creating games that I enjoy, surrounded by a wonderful community of respectful, passionate people.
5. What game inspired you most growing up? Pokemon Blue and Final Fantasy 7 probably had the biggest impact for me growing up, the stories and character development especially in FF7 was awesome. It’s probably how I learnt how to read too! Because of the lowpoly/pixel designs and hardware limitations, a lot was left to the imagination, as a kid I would always imagine some alternate story or dream about future games I could make. Final Fantasy 7 was also the first time I was exposed to cyberpunk visuals, a theme I still love to this day!
6. If you could give any advice to anybody that wants to make their own game, what would it be? Be patient and persevere. Starting out is hard, (game development in general is hard!) there are so many skills to learn at first and it can be overwhelming, not to mention the sheer quantity of programs to learn. Thankfully with time programs are getting more powerful and easier to use. If you ever get stuck, don’t be afraid to take a step back and do some learning or personal development. Everything in game development can be overcome with time and experience. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help, someone else will have definitely run into the same issue you have! 7. Where can people find you and your game?
