Important change regarding this game + Progress update


Hello guys! emanresu_yzal1 here.
I’m here to announce that our team has come to an important decision: This game is longer “Classic Underswap”. It’s our take on/interpretation of Underswap now. However, don’t worry! This project is still be heavily based on popcornpr1nce’s original Underswap, more so than any popular Underswap take. The personalities are still gonna be swapped, just less than in the original Underswap. The character designs are still gonna be mostly based on the original Underswap art.

Now, we did this for 2 reasons:
1) Since popcornpr1nce didn’t post enough information about Underswap characters before he quit making Underswap, we can’t really know what he intended. So, to call the game “Classic Underswap” and pretend like everything is gonna be like popcornpr1nce intended to be is nonsense.
2) I’m pretty sure that everyone who knows about Underswap knows that it’s heavily based on Undertale. Some people would call it a reskin, even. And the problem is, Toby Fox, the creator of Undertale doesn’t allow games that basically allow you to play Undertale for free, because he could lose money from selling Undertale if everyone could play Undertale for free, just with different sprites and the dialogue being rephrased (but still mean the same thing). So, to prevent that, the characters in this game now gonna swap the personalities less than Underswap. They’re still gonna largely swap the personalities(e.g Papyrus is lazy, Sans is enthuanistic), but they’re gonna keep some parts of their Undertale personality, that they didn’t keep in the original Underswap.

This means that we are going to change the name of the project. We are still deciding what should the new name(we might go with common teamname!Underswap, not sure though) and also what should be a name for this team.
We updated the page description to reflect this change, so if you have any more questions, read that.

Also, here’s a progress report! This one is gonna be the longest one we posted yet.

Flooded Ruins

Since Ruins swaps with Waterfall, the Ruins are now full of water. They’re renamed to the Flooded Ruins to reflect this change. We actually already have a concept for the entire Flooded Ruins! Only some scenery from Waterfall needs to be added to the concept and Asgore’s house needs finishing. We’ll be soon ready to start sprite-mapping.

(yes, it looks bad, but it’s just a concept, the actual in-game room itself will obviously look much better graphically.)

Sprites

Lots of sprites got changed and replaced with newer ones. Actually, almost none of the sprites shown here on Gamejolt are canon now!
Here’s a showcase of all the new overworld sprites:

All of these were made by uppie, our lead spriter.
(sorry, no battle sprites, we’d be showing way too much stuff at once if we posted them in this devlog)
You may have noticed that Asgore doesn’t use the design that won in the previous poll, and instead uses a design from the popcornpr1nce US artwork. We’ll see if we can still use that design somewhere(we may even revert the current design to the unused design, we. Please don’t ask us about this, because we have no idea what to do with with that unused design right now.

By the way, we are considering allowing the player to choose between shaded overworld sprites, like seen here and unshaded ones, like in Undertale. This would be made possible by either an in-game option to switch between them or making an official mod that adds/removes the shading from the sprite.

Programming

I’ll be honest here and say that currently, we have literally no code for the game. We used to have some basic code, but a virus hit Blantados’s computer, which had all the game data and wiped them out.. We are looking for more programmers. They’re the type of team members our team needs most currently. Demo(s)

Obviously, since we have no code for this game right now, making a demo is gonna take some time. We plan on releasing a pre-demo that ends at Mettablok’s fight (similar to what Primus did when they were still team Spritedgy) and maybe the pacifist Sans fight.
