Interest in a DOS Jam?

I guess pretty little stuff is happening here... I guess this community needs a bit of a little light-up. One of the things that can do that could be a jam, and maybe, now we are facing a lockdown could also be a great time to do this. Of course I am not really a jammer myself, but perhaps that could suit me just fine in the organizer role (don't want to lose my neutral stance).

The basis of the jam would then of course be easy. The game should run in DOSBox (I do not have a working real DOS computer at my disposal anymore, and DOSBox is free and easy to install, so the best way to go). If the game is written in pure assembler, C, Pascal, QBASIC, doesn't matter... As long as it runs on DOS.

For other kind of rules I want your input also....

  • Do we keep allow CGA, EGA, VGA, Tandy, VGA well anything, or do we want to limit things to certain graphic cards?

  • Do we allow all genres, or do we want things to be specifically RPG, Platformer, Puzzle?

  • A theme? Cute? Horror? Fantasy? Or just any theme you can think of

  • What is a valid time limit? Since we have not much quick game engines for DOS, the contestants are pretty much reliant on low level programming languages. Like I said I don't want any rules on the used programming language itself as long as it compiles to DOS binary or has an interpreter working in DOS. What is realistic? A week? Two weeks? A month?

And if you have any other ideas, just let me know... The jam has not yet begun, so if you have any ideas that can make this into a success, NOW is the time to speak.

DOS... Do it Old Style! 😉
