An update is being released late Friday afternoon(August 8th, 2014) to early the next Saturday morning. It will fix loads of bugs with the items currently in the game. The update will also include inventories 2.0! Watch this post for more information to come post release.

In order to unlock the power of a Shrine, you must collect 3 'Souls' from your dead corpses! (the floating blue orbs)
