Jam Favorites: Rainbow Jam 2017

Play some wonderful, colourful games!

The Rainbow Jam 2017 was a game jam that has the aim of promoting and celebrating diversity within the games industry! The theme was ‘Spectrum’. There were many games entered in this jam, I recorded all of them in my video compilation series. Below are some of my favorites, in a random order.

Planet Dysphoria is a very meaningful game, full of story and feelings. You are someone who is not quite happy on this planet. It’s almost like the Earth you remember, just not quite as good. This sounds like a rather trivial thing, but being reminded that the planet is not quite right, but somehow seemingly correct wears on you daily. Your neighbor has been working on a project that could help you get out of this fake world, but you have to go out on a limb and take advantage of it.

Planet Dysphoria is about more than just escaping the pseudo-Earth you are stuck on. It defines your happiness with yourself and how happy you could be if things were more correct feeling. Even when you leave this planet, you are given some additional story, a line or two of advice even, creating a very well made little adventure game with some real story behind it.

Monument is a beautiful and relaxing exploration game that has you walking around a seemingly deserted bit of forest. This forest does however contain a giant structure in the middle of an island, that might grab your interest, but you can take your time wandering around before getting there.

This structure is fairly special. It is made of floating colored blocks each with wonderful quotes written on them, made by other people who have played the game previously. Each of these quotes are uplifting and wonderful, and you can even add your own to the game. Monument is very relaxing and the quotes add a wonderful community aspect to the game that will put a smile on your face and warm your heart each time you visit it.

Prism Break is a stunning shooter that has you adjusting your laser beam in order to destroy gems coming towards you. Your laser is a beam of light, shining brightly from your ship. You can transform the color by using the color spectrum to go through the rainbow! As you do this, different colored gems will appear at the top of the screen and move towards your ship. You will need to destroy them before they go off of the screen, or else your health diminishes.

Your laser does work on a sliding scale, so the closer you are to the color of the gem, the faster they break. Some gems are clam like in nature, closing if your laser isn’t the perfect shade of color for the crystal. You will need to be mindful of these gems, as they take ages to open back up. The way the laser works in Prism Break adds a lot of uniqueness to the game, challenging you to cycle through colors fast and figure and attempt to survive! It’s also super pretty to watch.

An everlasting dream with you is a very curious game that has you exploring strange dreams while on your vacation. Your school year has finally ended and it’s time to enjoy your vacation. This seems like a great relief, until you start having strange dreams. These dreams have you playing the part of a ghost, trying to escape a world full of hazards. Lasers, enemies that follow you, red walls, turrets, and much more are looking to kill you before you wake up. You do have a dash that recharges, giving you invincibility and speed for a brief time.

You will use this dash a lot to rush down the screen and avoid everything in order to last another day. During the day, you can interact with one object in your room. Each object will affect your sleeping by adding health or making the level smaller, or even making your dash recharge faster. You will need to make this decision carefully as it could really help you survive. As the dreams and the week go on, you start to meet new narrators who are forcing you through these trails. These narrators are strange, but you must last each day to see what’s really going on…

Twink Bot is a zany robot dancing game! It’s a bit rough around the edges and does need some polish, but, who can resist robots doing pelvic thrusts? I can’t. In this game you play a robot who does not know how to dance. Through the grace of the infoOrb and through dance battling to the death, you will start to learn different moves to beat your competition. In each room of a dungeon, there are various different bots. You can dance battle each one by talking to them!

Once you speak to them, the game will open up a grid of moves. You can select the move then follow the correct cubic pattern to create your dance before attacking. Slowly, you can gain more moves that will not only hurt your enemies but also heal yourself! Sometimes, I feel that the game does not respond well to what I am doing, but overall I find that this game is super unique in its concept! Hopefully you can discover all of the sweet moves your robot body can do!

That’s all! These were all of the games that really stuck out for me in the Rainbow Jam 2017.
