Listen and Click post mortem

I’m writing this shortly after completing my second game Listen and Click and while I don’t expect many people to play it (although I totally hope people do), I do feel as if I should explain my vision for anybody that does.

Basically I really like the overall design, I can’t think of anything that this game even resembles and that actually makes me proud of it. Most of my inspiration came from the idea of being the hero in Dan Brown novel, where you have to figure out clues. Additionally the initial inspiration for the narrator came from the Stanely Parable. However I think the actually game is pretty far removed from anything. I’m not sure if thats a good thing or not though, I hope it doesn’t make the game to difficult to play. Part of me envisioned people playing this as a group, so multiple people were trying to figure out the clues. Overall I think I didn’t make it too difficult, that being said I’m very worried that when someone eventually gets stuck they won’t keep trying.

The main problem I had was that I’m one person, and I wish I was better at voice acting and had actual recording equipment (instead of just the mic on my computer). The game centers around the idea listening to the narrator and understanding his instructions, and I wish I could have done better in this regard. However I’m rather happy with the writing I did for the game. I hope the constant rhyming helps make up for my lack of acting.

As of this writing I’ve been the only play tester for this game. While I believe all bugs have been worked out, I haven’t had a chance to see if people get stuck on things. Also I wish I had wrote more of a mystery into it, so that people would have a more driving reason to get to the end.

Initially I had wanted to finish the game in a week, so I designed it to be finished in a week. It ended up taking two (college always gets in the way) weeks. I’ve debated about making it longer and having a more interesting conclusion that changes the flow, however due to time I left it as is. Overall I’m still content with the ending and the message. So if your reading this and haven’t played the game, please play it.

Well now I’ve written about what I thought about the game, so please feel free to leave a comment, particularly about any issues you may have had.
