Living and learning: Thoughts on finishing things

I started work on this game quite a while ago. In fact, I can’t even remember starting it. This game went on to become my first ever finished product: Rollie’s quest.

Rollie’s quest was published in the play store and has received an appropriate amount of attention considering the quality of the game, virtually none. While this may sound negative to some of you, the chief purpose of this game was never to be a commercial hit. The goal of this game was to aid me in learning about game development and to allow me to learn and improve my programming skills.

I think my publishing of the App on a major release channel such as the play store, even though it never will receive as much attention as it’s very early versions did on here, was extremely valuable. For one, it gave me closure on the project as I can finally consider it “Done”. The second and considerably more important lesson that I learned from publishing on google play was how to properly finish a project. There is a lot more that goes into publishing a game than you might think. While Gamejolt provides an incredible place to design and build fun little things, and publish games that would otherwise never see the light of day, I can say with certainty that publishing something somewhere other than here brings a whole new world of challenges.

By no means am I insinuating that Gamejolt should change. It does it’s intended job exceedingly well. but I am saying that it might make sense to push yourself off this platform and to dive into the much harsher environment that are mainstream platforms.

I have also decided to release a full, PC version of Rollie’s quest on Gamejolt as I believe that Gamejolt provides the best place to release such content on PC. Additionally, I added VR support and a new environment to test developing on my Oculus Rift. You can find it here: https://gamejolt.com/games/RollieVR/313920

Here's a peaceful little forest scene for this #screenshotsaturday, from the beginning of the game.

We made a lot of improvements on the Freezing Plains visual. Things like pine trees, tiny bushes, some rocks, and others game props!

A house I've built a while ago. :)

It nicely separates the snowy biome from the grassy one.

It's built with painted Ebonstone.

Spaaaace~

These are background sprites I've created for a game I'm working on at school ^w^ Click on the post to see how the sprites connect. You won't regret it! (personally, I think it's pretty heheh)
