Log of August - A talk about Environments

Hello again

5d09b94b9316f.jpg

Hey, what’s up? How’s the game coming along?

We’re still at it. Soon we’ll be able to design the levels according to the puzzles and the story. There’s still some way to go, though. School has picked up again so our time is sometimes a bit limited. Fear not, however, we’re still going strongly! -when we’ve got the time… :-)

Today we’re going to discuss the in-game environments. Something that I, the game’s artist, have been working on these past few weeks.

What to expect from the in-game environments?

Basically a lot of this:

As you might see from the picture there’s been a shift in terms of location. The original setting of the game will come back, though. It will, however, only be on the visual aspect, as the gamejam game has no relation to this version whatsoever.

So where exactly are we?

Not going into the specifics (because spoilers ¯_(ツ)_/¯) but I can say that we’re inside someone’s cabin. There are several rooms that you’ll of course be able to explore. It’ll be a cozy, yet gloomy feel. Nice.

Ok cool, but will we see other environments?

Yes. End of comment.

Here’s some technical artstuff

While developing the art I still go through the same process as during the gamejam; it’s all handdrawn with pen and paper, then scanned and colored digitally. (We’re not using post-it notes anymore btw).

For the colors I’m still keeping it to a very limited colorpalette, which is a challenge sometimes, especially when you’re trying to create a specific mood. The colors that are picked both serve to create the atmosphere and make interactable objects distinguishable from the ‘actual’ background.

New Segment: “The Code Corner”

And now for a brand-new addition to this devlog: “The Code Corner”
It’s about code. It’s the coder segment of the devlog. REVOLUTIONARY!!!

I asked the game’s programmer (@RocketBoyweee ) what inputs he had for the devlog. Here’s what we got, quote:
“[RocketBoyweee] fixed many glitches while surprisingly keeping all his hair.”

Well, that wraps it up for this month. Any questions you may have about the environments can be asked in the comment section. We’d love to hear response from you guys. :-)

Coming up next:

  • “Introduction of ‘H’”

  • “One year”

O K, Bye.

PS.: Again, if you want to talk about the game in any way (suggestions, contributions, critique, etc.) leave a comment or PM me via. Twitter (preferably). -Alex (withD.)
