Mario and Luigi: Superstar Simulator

Luigi's picture poker is finally complete! It was my most difficult coding challenge yet, and the result is super satisfying. A big thanks to my spriting team for making it look beautiful. Read the article to see how the minigame works


You beat Luigi if you have better card rarities than him. Cloud is lowest, then Mushroom, Flower, Luigi, Mario, and Star is the highest. You have a higher chance to win if you have the same amount of card rarities in one hand. One pair beats nothing, then 2 pairs, 3 of a kind, Full House (3 of a kind and a pair in the same hand), 4 of a kind, and then Flush (5 of a kind). If you both have the same hand, then the scores are counted to see who wins. But if the score and hands are the exact same with both players, nobody wins. You can set the multiplier for how many coins you or Luigi receive when one of you wins. The multiplier multiplies the score you get when you win and gives you that amount in coins for you to spend.

I haven't posted much because all of the work I'm doing is just optimizing. Any talk I'd do about it wouldn't be too interesting. I do have a little something though. Here's a work in progress of Knuckles' last attack

I added 2 more extra backgrounds to the battle customization for fun. First is a playable version of the cliff seen in both the title cutscenes and the Paperverse/F3 2024 trailer. I also conjured up a Shovel Knight background
