Happy Halloween, everyone!
As promised, we have prepared an update on our game for this month. We know it’s been a minute since our last devlog, so we want to make sure to give you guys an update on how everything is coming along for our game.
As previously stated in past devlogs, we will be releasing the rest of our game in a chapter by chapter format. We are currently working on chapter one, which will cover all of the Flooded Temples (so pretty much the Ruins of OG Undertale). Releasing in chapters will allow us to remain more focused during the development process and will mean that you guys won’t have to wait 6-8 more years for a finished product.
Progress has been a bit slower than we would like. We have had a lot of IRL responsibilities (full-time work/school, families, etc.) which has made it difficult sometimes to put in as much work as we would like. As such, there isn’t a ton that we can share in this devlog without venturing into spoiler territory.
What we can say is that we have completed the outline for the Flooded Temples, story-wise (including pacifist and genocide routes). This includes identifying character arcs for the major characters, nailing down mini-bosses, and concepts for the rooms that will be coming up.
Sadly, we identified quite a bit of content that will need to be cut (from Chapter one at least). We had originally planned on having two full sub-areas in Chapter one for players to explore with NPC’s, even more mini-bosses, etc. However, as we discussed these ideas, we came to the conclusion that they just didn’t seem to fit in with what we wanted to accomplish narratively in this first chapter. We really want this first chapter to hit hard and to have a powerful narrative, and at this time, putting in a bunch of side content would likely water that narrative down. We will, however, be looking for other chapters to put some of that extra content in.
To wrap up this devlog, we have a checklist of sorts outlining what remains to be completed for the rest of Chapter One. We will make sure to update this in future posts.
Writing Tasks
-Character Bio/Character Arcs for Toriel and Flowey (Complete)
-Story for Flooded Temples needs to be outlined (Complete)
-Script for the remainder of the Temples Rooms needs to be complete (existing rooms need to be edited/second-passed, and new rooms need to be fleshed out and given proper dialogue).
-Battles for New miniboss and Napstablook will need to be scripted.
-True Pacifist/Neutral route Toriel battle will need to be reviewed. Genocide route Toriel battle will need to be scripted.
-Random encounters for the rest of the Temples will need to be planned and scripted.
Music Tasks
-Current OST for Flooded Temples needs to be examined and reevaluated for quality and consistency.
-Necessary changes to songs identified above carried out.
-OW and battle themes for new mini-boss and Napstablook.
Art Tasks
-Basic layout for rooms in the rest of the Temples needs to be storyboarded
-Rooms will need to be sprited for Rest of the Temples
-Sprites/assets for Napstablook and new Mini-boss
-Sprites/assets for remaining random encounters
-Sprites/Assets for Toriel fight
-NPC overworld sprites
We will be working on these tasks for the next few months and will continue to update you as we make more progress. At this time, we don't have an estimate for when it will all be completed, but we will let you know once it gets closer.
