Hi, my name is Sil. It has been a week and a bit since the massive influx of followers, and in the days following that I have had some approach me and ask me questions about UNDERCREATOR. I hope to answer every single one of them here. If you have already asked me something that isn't featured in this list, please ask it again in the comments and I'll be sure to answer it whenever I can.
What is UNDERCREATOR?
UNDERCREATOR is an Undertale fangame engine that is built to aid the lesser experienced in creating their own Undertale fangame, utilising visual methods as well as real-time playback. Think of it like a video editor - you have a collection of clips in a timeline, and as you edit them you are given the end result instantaneously.
Has this been done before?
At the time I thought of the idea (summer 2023), some engine releases (like TML) and an unfinished battle designer were made, but I could not find a single instance where an attempt at something like UNDERCREATOR was ever made. There is a chance that something like this may have already happened, but for all we know, it is either lost to time or hidden under the millions of results that a search engine gives. If there are takes on this already, then I'm entirely unaware of them, nor do I intend to infringe on people's rights if an attempt is already underway.
Can't we use other engines instead?
The point of UNDERCREATOR is to ease fangame development without having to rely on external programs. Most of the software used to develop games are expensive, and free alternatives like Scratch or Unity (just to name a few) only have so much that is available to the user. Almost all project file downloads are available for free, but the programs needed to use them, along with any third-party plugins if they include them, do not come cheap.
Will this be coming to mobile?
Right now, there are very minimal plans to port it to any devices outside of Windows. Because this project will be open-source, if someone wants to port UNDERCREATOR to Mac, Chromebook, Linux, iOS, Android, or a Samsung fridge, I will allow them to under the condition that they ask me first.
Can we import our own custom sprites/music/whatever?
UNDERCREATOR encourages freedom of choice. In other words, you can use whatever you want. You can add your own music, you can add your own sprites, you can add your own tileset... anything goes!
When will this be released?
The demo will be coming out sometime later this year, while the full product is likely not going to be out until faaar later. There's a lot of work that goes into just one part of this project, and there are several parts to it. So I don't have a good estimated time of arrival. Sorry!
How many developers are there?
Currently, only me. Everyone else is either a translator, concept designer, or a tester.
How many translators are there?
We currently have eight - Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Japanese, Italian and Russian. I am looking to make this as accessible as possible, so if your language is not listed here and you're not fluent in English, please tell us and we may add it!
Additionally, you will be able to make your own fan translations once the engine is out.
But can you make Deltarune fangames?
No. DELTACREATOR is not something I wish to make. If you want to make it, go ahead.
