Hello everybody! To celebrate the 10th anniversary of FNaF World and as a final send-off to all of the reviews I made up until this point, I'd like to take a look and review the one and only, the original FNaF World!
I'll try to go over the main aspects of the game and see what they do right and what they do wrong.
Having at this point thought long and hard over the many aspects that made FNaF World what it is (fun fact! I thought of over 2000 unique moves for FNaF World: Universal Madness by @LivingCorpse7
!), I think I should be ready to tackle the original.
Time to go back to Animatronica!
The character/enemy design
By far my most favorite aspect of this game has to be the lovable cast of Adventure characters. Having the opportunity to play as your favorite animatronics in this adorable form is thrilling.
There's a good range of characters to choose from, from FNaF 1-4 (except, as probably made clear by the majority of fan games, Withered Golden Freddy, Nightmare Mangle and a few more forgettable others), as well as a few other odd choices (such as Endoplush) that all entered the roster of characters of the Franchise.
Some weird choices were made with characters such as Phantom Freddy or Nightmare Balloon Boy, but overall it's one of the most solid aspects of the game. Even enemies have become very recognizable (and he even managed to sneak in assets from his other games too!). Absolutely no further notes to add on this.
The battles
Another fantastic aspect of the game. Instead of being your classic RPG, the frenetic nature of the battles make the experience much more engaging and addicting almost.
Everything is easy, and mildly challenging at most, if you know where to look and what to use. But a blind run in this game is the best way to enjoy it as a newcomer. This will allow you to feel the progression better and to actually use the wide cast of characters available, making every battle the right amount of challenge without being frustrating.
This leads me to one of the less thought out aspects of the game.
The progression
It's absolutely screwed. You can just go to Glitch World whenever you feel like it and get insane characters. The god move that is Unscrew lets you get whatever you desire, whenever you desire it.
The best part is that you don't even need to travel far to find a character with Unscrew. Just stay where you started. So if you know of the Glitch World and Auto: Shield, then everything becomes quite meaningless, which is a shame.
Oh, the chips! Their placements make everything so much easier, so soon! You should not have Auto: Shield that quickly, and you especially should not have Auto: Giftboxes that quickly either! Some things on the map need to be moved to make the game more balanced.
On that note, let's move on to another problem the game has.
The battle moves
Some movesets are well designed and balanced. Some are just abysmal (looking at you, Toy Freddy) and some are just... weird. Take Nightmare Fredbear. He has Toxic Bite 2, Freddles and Mega Bite. Why? Toxic Bite 2 is completely useless! Why would you use it when you have the clearly superior Mega Bite?
It's moves like these that make you wonder just how much thought was actually put into this game. Well...
The cheapness
Let's be real. This game was rushed. Reusing models from other games, reusing models from this same game to make multiple copies for enemies, some movesets being the weirdest thing imaginable...
The game was rushed and if you look at it real good, you'll see that in the Overworld too with Adventure Fredbear's 2D idle sprite instead of a dedicated map sprite. It's a lot of small details like these that, when added up, make for an overall cheap feeling.
The cheapness is particularly present in the Update 2 characters especially. Nightmare Balloon Boy was just massacred.
And after all of that, you'd expect the game to be a mess. And in a way, it is a mess. It's objectively not a good RPG, and the poorly planned nature of it means that the game should theoretically, pardon my french terms, suck.
And yet it does not.
Actually, on the contrary: it's a blast to play through.
Maybe because it is as flawed as it is, the game is one of the best games I've ever had the pleasure to play.
The casual, playful style followed up by an excellent battle system mean that whatever is flawed in the game stops being something negative, but adds to the charm of it all.
FNaF World wouldn't be FNaF World without being this broken. It's a shame Scott Cawthon isn't proud of this game. It's understandable. But that doesn't mean it's not a good game. It's excellent, actually.
It's something that feels great to play through over and over again, with new challenges you can add yourself or with what the community adds as well. Many are the projects that try to fix the game or that try to improve upon it.
But when they do, they inevitably lose the part of FNaF World that made it as charming as it is. The Adventure style, the battle system, the jankiness of it all and how frenetic and colorful everything feels.
Adding more mechanics like these hinders the game, and while it's fun as a one-off thing, having a whole game like this makes it a little more slow, a little more boring.
That's why I don't like the RPG mechanics FNaF World Revelations will add, even if it is a wonderful game. Or why I am in love with @K-C_rwq
's FNaF World: QoL mod, which manages to make the game even more fun with the new additions.
I love fan games such as @GBAura
's FNaF World: Redacted, which actually makes you stop and talk to every character, making for a more colorful and lively experience.
They keep the nature intact while improving and adjusting upon it. The hardest challenge of them all, however, is only one. If you want to add more characters, you need to do it in your own style or in the Adventure style properly.
Both routes are absolutely amazing! For instance, check @FnafTheVendorTrio
's Restocked to see what I mean when I say a different style can work! But if you want something that actually feels like the real Adventure style, look forward to @LivingCorpse7
's FNaF World: Universal Madness!
But at the heart of everything, no matter what was added, it all started with just one RPG made by one amazing developer.
And for that, I am grateful it exists.
Here's to a wonderful anniversary for the game, and hopefully to a new year with FNaF World content! I can't wait to see what will come next!
