So let's talk about... That...

Over the last couple years Unity Technologies has continually made decisions which have prompted us to have meetings about the possibility of switching engine. We have always decided not to due to our experience with Unity, however recent news regarding changes to their pricing model has pushed us over the edge...

We had intended on the next blog post being "Living up to the name" where we broke down our WIP gore system however Unity decided to pull one of the most evil moves in recent history that has completely derailed the project.

GORE is now an Unreal Engine 5 game.

This is a decision that hasn't come lightly and is a decision we would've rather not have had to make as it has meant completely gutting our process for creating the game and sent us back to square one. However, we believe that this decision is not only in our best interest but also the players best interest.

This does mean that some changes to the game are going to be made. Those being:

  • No more 2.5d graphics.

    • This is the big one... The game is no longer going to have the 2.5d artstyle. The reason is time. Currently I am the only artist working on this game and it's going to be that way for the foreseeable future. I have also just started University and had a baby. Creating the graphics the way that I did by making 3d models, animating then rendering out as images, editing the images then importing into Unity is a time consuming process which, when combined with uni, a baby and learning a new engine just seems like a huge time commitment. Time that could be better spent working on making the overall game better. Switching to just a retro-3d style means that i am able to remove several parts of that process and streamline the process of creating graphics for the game.

I'm honestly disappointed in this as I love the 2.5d artstyle but this is a necessity. We're going to retain the overall style however and lean into the 3d more. Maybe one day we'll be able to do our 2.5d fps, but not today.

  • Supports for other operating systems

    • This one sucks too. We had intended on releasing for Windows, Mac and Linux however the engine change means we're just gonna focus on windows. We do still want to supports other operating systems in the future... just not now.

  • Slower development

    • Yeah this goes without saying but this is a huge delay.

So yeah.. that's that. Sorry this is not the best news but we don't want to ship a game using an engine from a company that feels the need to constantly treat their developers and playerbase like this. This is for the best and we look forward to future blog posts featuring more positive news!

Thanks everyone and we hope you'll stick with us throughout! If you have any questions leave a comment and i'll be sure to reply.
