Summary of what to expect from this project and why I decided to create it

About me and introduction:

Hello! I am TehBoss88. I am a Flash user/programmer who used to program small games years ago during the hayday of Newgrounds. None of my former projects were particulary well-made or good, but it was good experience that made getting into the newer (But still old I suppose) Actionscript 3/AS3 a lot easier.

I am new to AS3 and just recently became comfortable with it. If you're asking why I'm developing this in Flash, a rather defunct platform (soon officially defunct), instead of something more accessible like a game creator program or something like it, the short answer is that I simply just want to. Years ago on reddit I remember seeing someone write about wanting to remake Metal Gear 2 and Ghost Babel as fan games and re-releasing them to be playable on all PCs without use of emulation or any third-party programs. I thought this was a great idea, and I wanted to help out on the project, but like many other fan games (especially Metal Gear fan games) the project just sort of fizzled out and no more information was heard about this. Despite this, I made some demos using an older version of Flash and attempted to complete the project on my own.

Needless to say I did not have the skills or patience to actually ever finish this project, and it kind of just died down and I never touched it again. Metal Gear is my favorite video game series, and I've always thought it would be cool to make my own dream Metal Gear game. Now that I've gotten back into programming in Flash, and learned quite a bit more and gained a lot more patience, I decided to work on a remake of Metal Gear 2.

It truly began as a way for me to simply learn more about programming and gain more experience and knowledge about AS3 specifically. I just wanted to see if I could make an engine identical or similar to Metal Gear 2, but soon my ambition spiraled out of control and I decided to just make my own Metal Gear fan-game.

Being a fan-game, I will not be making any money off of this. I won't ever ask for any donations, and I'm charging nothing for the game when it's finished. Really I'm just making this as a passion project just for my enjoyment, but I thought Metal Gear Fan-Games are rare, and maybe other people would enjoy reading about its development and playing it whenever it ends up being finished.

Rather than focusing on any specific mechanics or features of the game, in this first article I'll simply explain overall things about the game below.

About the story:

Due to MG:Foxhound essentially being a Metal Gear 2 clone with another story, but utilizing mostly the same sprites, I knew if I wanted to make a game based around the canon, it would need to take place around the same time as Metal Gear or Metal Gear 2. I decided to make the story take place between the events of MG and MG2.

The storyline doesn't so much tie the two MSX games together, but it shows what happened in-between them. Of course the story isn't technically canon but it's meant to fit in with the canon story and not change too much else if you pretend it's there.

Essentially, this is a side-story which depicts Solid Snake's "final" mission with Foxhound, and the last time he fought alongside Grey Fox.

About the game:

This originally began as a way to see if I could build an engine functionally similar to MG2 in Actionscript 3. I would then reuse a majority of the code for other possible future projects. I actually commonly use sprites when I try to create an engine, and because I wanted something similar to MG2, I used MG2 sprites for it. Eventually this got out of hand, and I decided to remake MG2 in flash, and then I thought it would be better to just make my own story within the confines of MG2's mechanics. I love that game a lot, and it's one of my favorite games of all time. Yeah it gets a bit silly and nonsensical at times, but in a lovable way (I think because of its age).

There's really not much to say about the mechanics just yet. I will definitely detail most bits and pieces of the game as I continue working on it, but expect pretty much the same mechanics and features as MG2.

Final note on Collaboration:

If anyone would like to contribute sprite work or music for the project, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm not going to offer any sort of money for it though, and nobody is going to make any money off of this project.
