What's with all the good free apps getting enshittified and greedy, right? So it's goodbye Mega Voxels and hello MagicaVoxel!
I actually was going to start with MagicaVoxel from the beginning, since it's the same software GFC uses, but back then I was still on my... 15-ish years old Windows 7 CPU so uh... yeah that didn't work very well lmao. So the next best thing was a phone app called Mega Voxels, since it let you export your assets.
Unfortunately it seems greed has taken over them as the app now has become intrusively and hinderingly subscription-paid, after years. It had ads before, but I was still free to use the app. If I had a nickel for everytime I had a great/favorite app with just some annoying ads in the middle try to get "better" (except not really) by removing the adds but putting everything behind several paywalls to the point it barely felt like the app I used to like, I'd have two nickels... which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice. (looking at you, Planner 5D)
But fret not! At some point, my granny of a CPU gave its last breath but I managed to get a newer one with moderately better specs, on Windows 10. And guess what: MagicaVoxel works in this one! So that's what I'm gonna be using from now on.
The 'downside' is that MagicaVoxel has no mobile version, meaning I'll be able to work on voxels only when I can get on my PC, as opposed to being able to do so anywhere with just my phone like before. Oh well. Another thing is that it's a new software for me meaning there's a learning curve now as well, but I'm not too worried since GFC can help me in any case, since he uses the same software.
That said, I've already contributed to Killer in Purple 2 using the new software, and have been making projects unrelated to the game to help me get the hang of it-- which are the pictures I'm currently showing here! Aside from helping me get used to MagicaVoxel, those were also made to help cheer up a friend who was going through a very rough patch in their life as they could watch as I built these, as well as Zero being their favorite character. I also got that friend versions of these images as wallpapers for their phone. The rendering feature of MagicaVoxel is kinda slow but that's because my PC's specs aren't top-notch, but I'm happy I can do stuff like this at all now!
