billions must play, longread incoming
typical unique interpretation of the game from me which is gonna be off relative to the authorial intent but that's what worked for me at least
so spoilers below if you dare
9/10 though this time
_______
Power Star Fallen documents the initially quite dysfunctional bunch of orphaned teens chasing the mysterious doppelgaenger of their friend Aiko, protagonist carrying over from Power Star Journey, still a brat but seemingly not quite troubled by the stuff from before. however meeting his older self from the alternate timeline feels insanely symbolic of the adult life knocking on their adolescence's doors, it's pretty easy to grasp considering those devoid of families or, if not, wronged by fate tend to mature somewhat sooner
so that chase of A.I.K.O. goes on throughout both chapters
Team Aiko originally travels together without any separation between them but interestingly that has Aiko face off against A.I.K.O all alone in the end with little success as that doesn't get rid of him thoroughly
so they decentralise in chapter two once the sword of truth meant to kill A.I.K.O for good is pulled outta the stone in the woods by Aiko and timetravel shenanigans occur
this is where Power Star Fallen shines even if i'd love to grill the amounts of grind but i imagine it's semi-optional, just well kill as many as you can but don't overdo it like i did, may hinder your enjoyment
the whole party sees a lot of development while on their own, funnily enough Aiko's quite short alone time is in itself his development because he doesn't just rely on himself like when first facing A.I.K.O, so he connects better with his friends. for instance upon running into Priscilla he immediately apologises to her on behalf of literally everyone
both Elena and Priscilla show they won't falter before the Abandoned Ironic Kombatant Oneirico's hardships which emphasises to me their love for Aiko is pretty equal but yeah it's obvious who Aiko goes with and Priscilla most importantly can even accept that and stick to just friendship
Reid coming across as a bit of a narcissist faces just that and without a hitch outgrows that, that is doubled down on later during the battle against Moonzy, where he still acts out of line BUT he sees his crap to the end, he wins that effectively losing battle not for his own sake but for the sake of his friends. he even dies for that briefly! this also deconstructs in more ways than one the first chapter's narrative of their friendship is power trope being silly and cliche, like this chapter has them part ways and grow independently as well as learn to appreciate each other. so it's no longer a mere trope and they're not even too dysfunctional anymore
the ultimate culmination of that is embodied by Ms Calloway Marcy, her revenge-driven older version
it takes a bit for the party and Marcy to warm up to one another but they ultimately do. Marcy starts out as a henchwoman of A.I.K.O's which places her among those wronged by their own i guess i'll call it misdevelopment. it is still unclear how precisely A.I.K.O had come to lost everyone but the point was that he did nothing to cope with this or repent if he had a hand in this, as Aiko points out way back in chapter one. he just turns megalomaniac and seeks to actualise apocalypse for Taiko Island and whatnot, he even kills their deity princess Porthos to achieve that but he doesn't know Porthos is in cahoots with Priscilla for one, i feel like this matters because in a way this has given them the upper hand from the start at least based on how their own certainty and will hadn't faltered once as they continued to press on
ultimately they all mature throughout the story and face off against A.I.K.O together now, taking him down forevermore, but this growth of theirs where they seemingly have little to no external witnesses could be written off as a dream, right? WRONG because Samus pulls a bona fide earthbound moment on us and has Marcy ACKNOWLEDGE their growth from the past just like the future Marcy already did. so she PRAYS and that's what probably resolves the conundrum that is this timeline's existence. EVERYONE reflects on their mistreatment of Marcy at the very start of the story. and Marcy accepts it too. so when they come to they're all far more experienced than that ragtag bunch of misfit friends at the start.
