The Villain’s Lair: Cooperative Adventure is a multiplayer game meant for 1-10 players. You can either take on the role of a hero, delving deep into the villain’s castle to defeat the dreaded villain. Or, you can play as the villain, setting up traps, marshaling minions, and locking doors to prevent the heroes from reaching you before the timer expires.

Features

  • Single-player is available, and players can choose to play only as heroes and leave the villain to be played by AI.

  • Multiple difficulty options and customizable settings allow you and your friends to play the way you want to play. Do you want to turn the time limit off, turn the enemies up to mythic difficulty, and join 9 other players to explore the dungeon together? Well, you can!

  • Combat is a standard or default turn battle, with a few exceptions. Other players can join you in battle, and you can work together to defeat tough foes.

  • You can customize your heroes by choosing from 14 different categories of skill types. Each category has 3 tiers of advancement and skills from different categories can be mixed together to create devastating abilities with the effects of both categories. For example, unlocking the first tier of Fire gives you a skill that does magic damage with a 10% critical hit chance. Unlocking the first tier of the Ice category unlocks a skill that does magic damage and slows a foe. Unlocking both will give you a skill that does magic damage, has a 10% critical chance, and slows the foe! Likewise, the first tier of Area of Effect gives you a skill that does physical damage and targets all enemies. Mixing Ice and Area of Effect will give you a magic ability that targets all enemies and slows them. This is a system that I’ve wanted to implement for a long time and am excited to see it coming to fruition.

  • Heroes can further customize themselves by using stat points and leveling up specific stats. Level 10 is the maximum level that heroes can reach.

  • Heroes can find treasure chests with a wide variety of loot, including different rarities of weapons, armor, and items.

  • The Villain can select exactly what types of minions will appear in each room, and can regularly update rooms that the players have already cleared, forcing the players to fight monsters in rooms they had previously thought clear. Want to mix and match poisonous minions with minions that slow? Or perhaps you want to surround your dragon with a bunch of skeletons to shore up the boss fight? As the villain, you have an impressive amount of control over the dungeon!

Storyline

After decades of tormenting the populace, the tyrant who lives in the nearby castle has been betrayed by one of their not-so-loyal minions. The minion claims that the villain is undergoing a magic ritual to become immortal. During this ritual, the body and the spirit of the villain are separated, and the body is in a trance-like state. Now, the villagers have chosen heroes to brave the castle dungeons and kill the vulnerable tyrant. They race against time to navigate the dungeon and defeat the monsters inside, eventually finding the key to unlock the throne room and defeat the villain themself. However, the villain is no fool. If the villain can keep the heroes away until the ritual is complete, the reborn tyrant will lay waste to the village once and for all.

Credit & Special Mentions

This game is made possible with a wide variety of plugins from Pheonix KageDesu, Yanfly, HIME, WAY, and others. The credits for this game will include a full list of everyone who contributed through their plugins, artwork, or in other ways.

This game will remain fairly simple, simply because I think it will do better that way. At its core, I want this to be a game that allows you to play a match or two with some friends without stressing too much. However, the systems I have made and am making for this game may come into play in future projects that I create.

Roadmap

  • December 2023: I introduce the in-development game to the forums.

  • December 2023 -January 2024: I work on development of the first playable demo.

  • Late January 2024: I will release the first playable demo of the game for playtesting. If you’d like to be included in the playtest, please notify me.

  • January-February 2024: Adding additional features, such as larger dungeons. (Currently, 3x3 is the only option)

  • March 2024: With any luck, I will have a fully playable version of this game available for purchase.

This isn’t my first game project, but it’s likely the first that I will be able to complete anytime soon. Please feel free to leave your thoughts and any constructive criticism or questions that you may have. #rpg #multiplayer #adventure #coop #rmmv #dungeoncrawl #gamemaster
