What do you think?

Fanart upon thee

I gotta be honest. This wasn't that great.

Before the critiques, quick aside, but this Toriel scene is so funny lol

image.png

In front of the child?? Toriel...... Silly!

project_bluelight_demo_fjydit8zbj_03-12-2026_17-31-551.gif

And I encountered a bug here. I don't think the cutscene system likes button mashing(or at least I assume that's what happened here.)

But anyways. I honestly don't have much to say about the overall package as, like you said, it's incredibly short, which makes me wonder why this was released in the state it's in. There's literally no other encounters besides the dummy. Maybe I missed a few key things here or there idk, but it also really doesn't help that when you do want to explore, the game just doesn't let you, like it's teasing you. Toriel's been waiting for the entirety of my playthrough.

image.png

So what you're left with is essentially just a walking simulator of a slightly edited Ruins. Not great. Again, I probably missed some things, but the game's constant handholding doesn't help either.

Next section in spoilers:

I'm sorry, but this is a really lame way of handling patience's gear being in the Ruins. So your interpretation is that it's just always been there for what could've been centuries..? No one else bothered to mess with it? Idk about that... Surely there could've been a better way for their gear to have landed there, like having monsters you helped out in the Ruins place your gear there after your passing, or maybe Toriel digging out a hole just for you since you've been so nice to her, or something. There's a lot of spiders in the game. Maybe something could be done there?

I'm really not a fan of the patience soul design. It's the typical "soul kid wears the same color as their soul" thing, but also... the blue hair.....

image.png
image.png

... why? It looks so tacked on and doesn't even really fit. We get it, their the cyan soul and all, but you don't need to make that so obvious to us. You would have a lot more creative freedom if you tried a more original design. I really wish prequel games would stop doing the soul color design thing...

So, what could be improved and how? Firstly, better soul kid design. Do remember that you don't need to show their gear! You can if you want to, but you don't necessarily have to. Frisk, Chara, and Kris don't show their gear, so it isn't a rule to stick to. If you want some inspiration for designs, I shall showcase my own soul kid designs!

Secondly, give players more things to interact with, and let them explore if they desire. Have Toriel react if you try to wander off, maybe even chase after you or look for you. The kid in the beginning clearly doesn't look comfortable being with Toriel yet, so why not do something with that? Allow branching pathways if we choose to. I don't think Toriel should be loredumping on us this early. Her "arc" felt really rushed and we barely gotten to know her before we were thrown off path. How about more interactions with her and have her guide us throughout the Ruins?

If there's more things that players can do, let them know about it. If I was supposed to backtrack, then communicate that with the player, instead of expecting them to "Just Know". Let us encounter monsters and actually get to know our surroundings.

Overall? Well... we all start somewhere, right? I know my beginnings weren't great either, trust me, but that's why I'm providing feedback here so I could see this improve and become potentially great! I can't recommend this demo in its incredibly short state currently, but I do hope for the best for the team.

Project Bluelight (DEMO)

Version: 0.1.1about 6 hours ago
This is a demo. There is more game planned.

((This game is meant to be played by users who already played UNDERTALE))

Welcome to Project Bluelight.

In this fan-made RPG based on the world from the hit RPG "UNDERTALE", your task is to assist a human who falls underground into the world of monsters. Lead the human carrying the light blue soul into an old story that... shouldn't have happened..?

  • Meet strange enemies!

  • Meet stranger friends!

  • Meet strangerer monsters whose relation to you may be neutral!

  • Befriend, Hurt, or do the unthinkable by using the somewhat-expanded battle system. (Not in the demo, though.)

  • Created by (mostly) one person

  • Featuring a full original Soundtrack (And available UNDERTALE variants for the ones who would use their melodies!)

  • Time your actions, and be sure to dodge attacks!! You wouldn't like SOMEONE throwing a brick at your face, would you??

  • Befriend a wolf. Maybe.

  • Seriously... This is a DEMO... i can't talk much without spoiling stuff:(

FAQ:

Q: I found a bug / error / crash / oversight that isn't fun. Where do i report it?

  • PLEASE mail a screenshot of the bug/crash report, and tell me what you did to cause it, to this mail:
    [email protected]

Q: Why is the game's quality so... low?

  • can't profit, so making this game is a hobby. but aside from that, i'm aiming for at minimum the same quality than ut's demo, and at max for deltarune's. remember (so far) i did everything except for the base engine, so making it better would've delayed this like, another year lol.

Q: What is the development plan?

  • A: it'll be ready when it's ready. i'll chip at it on-and-off as a hobby because i have a life to keep up with. though i'd like to assemble a team of cool people to help me finish the game in less than 20 years lol.
because of how the game is structured, the better approach would be to make area-based releases (there are 4-5 planned), so once the full area 1 is done, it'll be released.
(expect the full game to be out post-DR ch7, and pre Mother 3 coming out of Japan lol.)

Q: Will this game receive localization other than english?

  • A: Ya fue localizado en español (de una forma increiblemente neutral). In other languages? It's possible and simple to implement, but it's not **planned** (because i don't know how to speak them lol).
In any case, if a good unofficial translation pops up, it will probably be implemented (and credited) in the game.

Q: Why is the game not called "UNDERTALE Bluelight/ Light Blue"?

  • A: To not falsely-trigger Copyright Claims, like it happened with similar fan-games. This game isn't UNDERTALE, nor uses its music or code, after all. (some textures, ui, and a few character names do, but if i changed those, it'd just be a whole original game and IP)
To be entirely clear, I'm not trying to pass this off as an original property. This game is an UNDERTALE fangame. This name is only an attempt to protect creators from unfair flagging because current detection systems SUCK.
(also bluelight sounds cooler than light blue)

Q: How old is x character?

  • A: if they look like a kid they're a kid. Use your brain.

Q: How does this game differ from UNDERTALE CYAN?

  • A: Of course the story and cast are almost completely different, with the only exception of someone (that is not in the demo). It was a bit too late to scrap several parts of her as a character because of being a core part of the story, so this one and Cyan's, while being different characters, could be considered 2 sides of the same coin. I personally consider this a "Sister Game" (to ut cyan), and you probably should do so, too.

Q: Why split the game from Cyan?

  • Well, to be brief, having been on the dev team for ~2 years, i realized i did not want the story to be the one we were working on. So i decided to step down and branch onto my own "cyan" version. (this was in like, late 2024 i think)
so, tldr; different creative visions between the project owners led to the project splitting in 2... which means you all now get 2 different fangames that are equally non-canon! yay!! (yes, everyone involved is okay with this, i asked, don't worry.)

Story, Dialogue, Sprites, Coding & Soundtrack by @thehairdudelmao (yes i made almost everything)

This exists thanks to @delicioushazokie (check out undertale cyan!)

Original game engine from 2024 by @_pancakez (thank you again for letting me use it as a base!) (and for fixing broken parts of it like, twice thrice way too many up until now)

The in-game credits are meant to parallel the original demo.
Most assets in the "Ruins Halls" Area, Intro, and several other parts, belong to Toby Fox and the UNDERTALE team, or are an edit of them.
