I'm a big fan of TT Act 1 so far. The combination of dark humor and the arbitrary, absurd oppressiveness of the setting works insanely well. This is presented through the gameplay itself:
-While item drops weren't much of a problem, stores were scarce. Any beds, inns, or magical healing checkpoints were absent. It creates a sense of inhospitability. The restorative items you do get have chances of debuffing you, which measures a player on their risk-for-reward sensibilities.
-There are no trash mobs. Each encounter is unique and there were many situations with gimmicks (quizzes, timed fights, hp rollback mechanics). The wildcards are constant, and there's no one to grind on for the diaper padding of xp boosts or item drops.
-You don't gain much money. There's some odd, low number of soul shekels as a reward, occasionally. Coupling this with the scarce stores really gives the impression that Oswald can make just enough to get by.
-One save file. You get one file. Any decision you make is done and there's no scumming about it.
I'm judging this in terms of a part of a larger game, but aside from some odd teleports and unwalkable areas, I'm very interested in this game thusfar. It manages to catch a grungy, flaneur atmosphere while still keeping a varied design through fantastical whimsy and fun characters.
pretty awesome. when's the release date?
