Lavender Fields (Preview) - Velora
Â
“There was no pain as I landed. I felt the soft rumble, a pre-echo of agony, and expected my bones to crack and buckle beneath it. But there was nothing. Just the scent of lavender, tied up in neat purple bunches, drifting between the walls of stone.”
Undertale Lavender is a parable about the fourth fallen human, Sterling, who stumbles into the world of the Underground.
It’s a parable about magic; it once enchanted every part of society, and it’s slowly being polluted by technology.
It’s a parable about prophecies, how they weave tapestries with unseen hands, and the inane effort of changing them.
It’s a parable about perseverance.

Welcome to Undertale Lavender, a new take on the Undertale franchise which introduces:
A modular, build-based, spell-focused battle system w/ deck builder elements
New systems for overworld exploration
A RUN button (hooray!)
A rich story with all-new characters, locations and themes
New expansions on Undertale’s story
A look into the distant, magical past of the Underground (and how it became what it is today)
A prophecy that must be fulfilled by any means necessary.

BATTLE
Hidden within Sterling’s Torn Notebook is a wellspring of raw magic, summoned up by the power contained within his own SOUL. Through the use of his ARCANA resource, he utilises his innate skills in spellcraft to best his opponents by channeling this magical energy through the pages of the notebook. At his disposal are three schools of magic, distinct in their effects:
INCENDIA spells are manifestations of anger, passion and drive that burn up in the SOUL like a furnace. Sterling channels this force into fiery blasts of arcana, trailing through the sky like falling comets.
GLACIA spells are calm, tranquil thoughts that are frozen over by stillness and peace. They emerge from Sterling’s notebook as crystallised swaths of ice, lurching forth in geometric shapes.
STATIA spells begin as pure, flickering sensations of joy and happiness that surge in bursts throughout the body, darting out of the notebook as sudden shocks of electricity that arc throughout the air in branching paths.
Throughout Sterling’s adventures, he comes across technology modifications that allow for more varied use of these spell schools. Be cautious when using them, however. Magic and tech don’t exactly mix.
Here are some other changes we’ve made to the battle system:
The characters he meets on the way will help him in battle through character-specific ACT options.
ITEMS now provide more unique benefits, aside from just recovering health.
Through the use of CHARMS and TOMES, Sterling is able to combine different effects and form powerful synergies.
By pushing Undertale’s RPG tropes a little bit further, we’re introducing a modular, build-focused battle system with elements from other franchises such as Deltarune, Path of Exile, and even some deck builder features inspired by Inscryption.
OVERWORLD
Sterling’s magical capabilities permeate every part of his exploration, including his time spent out of combat. Due to this, he’s able to use his spells in the overworld to traverse landscapes, solve puzzles, and interact with the Underground in new, never-before-seen ways.
The Torn Notebook will follow closely behind Sterling as he wanders, providing assistance and guidance where needed. Through the use of the notebook, Sterling can SAVE and LOAD his progress at LECTERNS. He’ll even be provided tailored tips when he meets an unfortunate end.

THEMES
“Perseverance is not the same as Determination. Determination is about letting hardships glance off your armour, leaving you unscathed. Perseverance is about letting hardships change you, and forcing yourself to adapt to your situation; even if you sustain a couple of wounds.”
A human child, capable of magic? Is such a concept even possible? Monsterkind has seen nothing like it for centuries, but yet, here he is; a being that somehow blurs the lines between “human” and “monster”, with the appearance of the former and the abilities of the latter.
His Torn Notebook - it speaks to him, sends messages to his head. The rawest form of consciousness somehow lies within those pages, and it knows exactly how Sterling’s story is going to play out. How much control does he really have, when the story’s already been written?
Magic has been a staple of the Underground for as long as most can remember. It’s woven through every part of society, so much so that a being incapable of magic would not be able to survive. But, with the introduction of technology, is it better to leave magic behind for the sake of progress? Is Magic vs. Technology a battle that can be won?
And, in every world such as this one, we must ask the same question.
Who deserves to die?
PROGRESS
The Genocide and Pacifist routes for UTL are fully drafted, with Neutral well underway. Primarily we’ll be sharing information about the story in posts instead of here in the description, but the themes above should give you a good implication of what we’ve prepared.
We’ll be following the canon of Undertale as closely as possible, with a couple of liberties.

Q: When’s the game going to be out? / When’s the demo going to be out?
A: It’ll be out once I’ve earned the respect of my toaster.
Kidding, of course! It’ll be out when it’s ready.
Q: What makes this game different from other Undertale fangames?
A: It’s hard to stand out among other fangames when they’re all so great! Though if we had to pick a couple distinct details:
The modular, build-focused battle system
The unique spin on the Perseverance soul’s notebook
The use of spells in the overworld as exploration and puzzle-solving mechanics
CHARMS and TOMES in the battle system
But our goal at Team Lavender isn’t to make arbitrary changes for the sake of standing out. We have a story to tell. All of these mechanics we’re implementing are deliberate choices that will shape Sterling’s story.
Q: Will this be canon to Undertale / UTY?
A: Yes, and kind of. We need to make certain changes to the canon if we want to tell the story we’re going for. We’re incorporating elements from UTY, but we’ll deviate if it makes for a better story.
Q: Why Perseverance?
A: The ideals of Perseverance fit exceedingly well into our story, and it made for an interesting challenge to define its differences from Determination. (Seriously, what was Toby thinking? They’re literally synonyms.)
Q: Can I join Team Lavender?
A: Yes, positions are open! See the pinned post.
Q: Will this game have any returning characters?
A: Only one will appear as a part of the story. Asgore.
Q: So no Flowey?
A: He’s involved, trust us; he just won’t appear.
Q: Nobody’s asking you guys these questions. Are you making them up?
A: No further questions please!!
