Around the mid 70', Disney acquired a little island near the costs of Bay Lake, Florida, and after a few months, on April 8th 1974, Disney opened to the public " Treasure Island ", a park opened along with " River Country ", another Disney Park located a few meters away of it.
Theme and attractions:
Despite the name, the island was more of a zoo/natural reserve for the native species of the place, that included mainly: exotic species of birds in danger of extinction, lemurs and giants turtles, it also stood out for having the biggest colony of scarlet ibis chicks in all USA, they also had flamingos and shows with macas and cookatoos.
Important dates:
April 8th 1974:Opening of "Treasure Island" to the public.
1976: The name of the island was changed to " Discovery island ", the island was also the filmation site of the movie " Treasure of Matecumbe ".
1989:the PETA association demanded Disney for the mistreatment of many vultures who landed in the island.This provoqued a big lack of visitors.
April 8th 1999: exactly 25 years later, the closure of " Discovery island " occured due to the lack of visitors and the opening of " Disney Magical Kingdom ".
July 9th 1999: That day, all the animals of the island where moved to " Safari Village " on Disney Magical Kingdom.
Legacy:
After it's closure and " Abandonment ", became the inspiration to create the " Abandoned by Disney " creepypasta saga,created by Christopher Howard ( Slimebeast ) on 2012, and at the same time, the Creepypasta along with the videogame " Five Nights at Freddy's " became the inspiration to create " Five Nights at treasure island " created by Matthew Phoenix Rodriguez ( Anart1996 ) on December 2014.
Today we don't only celebrate the birth of an old abandoned attraction, but also for an island that became the location of one of the most popular horror tale/ game of modern Internet
