Hello!
As you might already know, we frozen the development of Dyingworld and instead decided to work on much simpler in scope projects. Cryo is one of them.
Before the reveal it was code named "Project IF", and with a reason. IF is an acronym for "interactive fiction" since Cryo was supposed to be a text interactive fiction game.
In this post, we're going into detail about the pre-production phase of Cryo. We hope you'll enjoy!
2019, Project Carolina
In 2019 some members were working on Project Carolina, a standalone interactive fiction game set in Dyingworld's universe. It told a story about an AI created to simulate human emotions and create conversations. It's goal was to beat the Turing test, to be later integrated into popular social media apps as a measure to prevent suicides.
This project was cancelled due to the increasing complexity, which later became something larger than "a simple side game made in a short time". The design was kept for a future in case we will be able to realize this project at a later time.
2020, "Project Madeline"
In 2020, we were developing a game for a game jam in which the theme was just "space". We haven't managed to finish it on time. We might make this game at a later date.
This experience inspired us to design a space themed game. Our lead game designer always creates simple idea documents once he has a great idea for the game and keeps them for the time when the project can be realized. This was the case for the project known as "Project Madeline". It was a combination of Carolina and a completely different setting and story.
When we were making a decision to freeze the development of Dyingworld, we wanted to start pre-production of another one, to make up for the disappointing announcement. We had different ideas as to what to make next, taking our current possibilities in mind. We had two nice options:
PS1 styled first person shooter (sci-fi inspired by Neon Genesis Evangelion)
First person adventure game (sci-fi set on Triton, Neptune's moon)
And you can guess which one we choose. When we started pre-production, we decided to transform the interactive fiction into an first person adventure game because it will open a lot of possibilities for narrative and gameplay.
Cryo
Currenly, we can't give much detail about the project we're currently developing. We're in early production and we're experimenting with different approaches to the gameplay and narration.
Mistakes were learned while developing a project like Dyingworld. We now have a much stable foundation, both code and design ones. We know our capabilities and adapted the scope accordingly.
We can't wait to show our creation! Stay tuned for occasional devlogs and media releases.
