Hoo boy...
Considering Crossovertale is being developed using Unity, this is concerning and demoralizing news. While this is unlikely to affect us, as CT is going to be a 100% completely FREE game with no intention on profiting nor having any monetization whatsoever (I mean, considering it's a big crossover mishmash, we aren't even legally allowed to do that anyways!), the future feels uncertain for everyone who decided to use Unity as their game development tool of choice. There is not telling what they might try and pull under the radar next time that will affect free games and demos in the future.
However, there's no plans on stopping development nor any plans on switching engines any time soon.
Switching engines after spending years making this work with Unity's editor is neither feasible nor encouraging with literally one person (Eir) carrying all the work programming CT's Engine and editor features.
Development using Unity will continue for now, none of us however condone, not approve nor consented to anything Unity plans to further monetize on indie projects. The trust they had built for years has been broken in a single day and here's hoping they sow what they reaped with their rampant greed sooner than later.
To all Unity developers caught in the shuffle, wishing you resilience and the best of luck moving forward with whatever plan of action you may have chosen.
And to anyone considering Unity as a tool for making games?
Don't.
At least not until they fully roll back on their latest policy.
