Hello Disbelief fans!
It's been a full year since we released a build, and unless you're an active user on the Undertale: Disbelief Discord server (https://discord.gg/GPAEVEx), you haven't heard a word from us since then. We are extremely grateful that so many of you are still here, waiting patiently for this game.
First, a quick explanation of what's going on and where we've been.
Since the latest build, we've switched from coding with Clickteam Fusion 2.5, to using GameMaker Studio 2. This means we had to recreate all of our content from scratch. That is undoubtedly the main cause of our delay. We had to switch to GameMaker, because we realized that we weren't gonna be able to do many of the plans we had for the game, in Fusion. As of right now, we have recreated all the content we had in the latest build, and it is looking better than ever. Much smoother mechanics, way fewer bugs, better sound design, and so on. Additionally, we've added so much more content. We can't wait to release this build for you all! We don't have a release date yet, but we are getting quite close. Admittedly, our speed of development has had a couple of dips in the last 12 months, since we're always struggling with our amount of coders. If you have any experience with GameMaker and you are interested in helping out, please see the Discord link posted above and follow the instructions on how to apply to join our team.
Now, to properly address the lack of updates and progress reports from me, you first need to understand this;
I have absolutely no idea how to code.
People are constantly asking me if I'm still working on Disbelief. You need to understand that I have no experience in coding whatsoever, and all I can actually contribute with to the game is dialogue, music, sound design, LORE, and minor sprite work. Mainly, my role in this project is the lead director of the game. But with the lack of coders we have, that really isn't much. Whenever you see me streaming on YouTube and you say "Why aren't you working on Disbelief?", you have to understand that there is rarely much I can do. Most of what needs to be done, is coding.
Which brings me to another point.
This project is a team effort. Soon, we will update our GameJolt page to better represent our talented developers. As an individual, I recently started studying at a music school where I live in a dorm far away from my home, and I have been kept quite busy since then. However, since what we need now is mainly coding, this hardly slows down development. Because as a team, we are still very active, and whenever I return to talk and work with the team, they've always got plenty new stuff done. We're sorry we haven't been posting progress reports here on GameJolt. But our director of development, Draco, frequently posts progress reports on the Discord server linked above!
There have been some misunderstandings about our policy on Disbelief fangames. Of COURSE we allow and encourage fangames that regard our project. It is thanks to the concept of fangames that we get to work on this at all. However, when our attack designs, artwork, dialogue or music are used without our permission, it becomes quite troubling for us. We have made some team decisions to work against projects that exist solely to replicate or undermine our work. Specifically, when a game claims to be an accurate copy of my animation (with my own original music featured), we have to take actions to work against content theft. I've received a lot of personal attacks on myself as an individual, for these collective team decisions. Only because it is among others, MY content that we are all trying to protect.
By now, we've pretty much given up protecting our work, and we've had to realize that life is about more than being defensive about Undertale fan projects. We hope to only have friendly interactions with other Disbelief-inspired projects from here on out, and we are calling a truce with any projects that may feel we have been unreasonable.
I hope that this whole post answers a lot of your questions and makes sense! If you have any more questions, please ask them on our Discord server and we will be happy to answer them: https://discord.gg/GPAEVEx.
Now enjoy a bit of game footage ;)
