Unbound: Worlds Apart

Unbound, is a cute atmospheric platform puzzle game, which really got me. Both in originality in gameplay, as in the nice atmospheric setting in which the game takes place.

In this game you assume the form of Soli. A kind of a shadowwizard like humanoid creature. You are sent out to find your missing brother when disaster strikes and a portal to an alternate reality opens with all the disaster that brings. Now it's up to you to save whatever there is to be saved.

So far nothing new under the sun.....

But now for the gameplay.... Are you still reading? You are.... Good. Now we come to the good part. The basics is that of a normal platformer, however Soli gets the power to create portals in which an alternate reality is not only shown, but also real. In the screenshot above you can see poisonous water that is deadly by the touch, but the alternate reality that doesn't exist, allowing you to walk through it.

That is not all though... The power Soli has at his(?) disposal can differ, based on the gates he travels through. The base gate creating the alternate reality cannot move, so you'll have to be inventive if you need the alternate reality over a large area, but turning it off and on with perfect timing as you move. I've also seen a part where Soli will reverse gravity.

Light and shadow is also an interesting setting, as you will only see the light and shadow when you stand still and it will shrink quickly to non-existent when you move. This can therefore require perfect timing as the platform in the show above is only solid in shadow form. And some enemy creatures are even invisible without shadow.

There are several teleport monoliths. You can only use them when you've passed them at least once, however once you did you can use the automap to quickly transport to those points. This helps you to quickly nagivate over the map and not having to do the same stuff over and over and over.

The controls are very smooth, and although you will need some time to get fully used to them, as working with summoning alternate realities is a kind of a new area in gaming, you'll get used to them pretty quickly. The focus lies on puzzling and not on action. The game also seems to avoid aggression as I could never attack enemies... at least not directly as a few could be lured to death, most of them just need to be avoided. The user interface is easy to use and properly explained, so anybody should be able to get the hang for things quickly.

Now the graphics LOOK a bit simplistic, but don't be fooled, these are highly detailed graphics, and I like them. The atmospheric music that I heard on the background, really made me into this. I've only played the demo, and now that I've completed this demo, I'm in a bad mood... Why? Because I wanna go on, and the demo doesn't let me. That's why!

If you like fantasy worlds, atmospheric music and theming, and you like puzzling a bit, and you want to try something different, hey, then this is the game for you. It certainly is the game for me, and I placed a follow here on Game Jolt, I've put it on my Steam Wishlist, and I hope the price for the full game (I cannot imagine this game's gonna be free) will be affordable.
