why i don't like putting bottomless pits in my side-scrolling games

(i have been avoiding them since the original Magic Forest: Adventure of Wizard): i don't want the player chara to just faint from going too far down with no explaination.

bottomless pits are fine if the view does not scroll up/down because i always know that the pits start from the bottom of my view.

but when the view does scroll up/down, it's often impossible to know where the bottomless pits start until my chara has fallen in there a few times already

(i could add vertical scrollbars to fix this, but there are much better ways to design the world with no bottomless pits in the first place)
