Hey, consider adding a video. half a gig may deter gamers from downloading it if they are not sure they'll enjoy it.
You named the dog Biscuit? Cute!
Introduction
Meet Biscuit! She is a young rescue/tracking dog, and the main character of the Lost and Hound. The game's audio reflects the powerful hearing capacity of dogs, and the scent trail you must follow is represented by a low, pleasing hum.
But the trail is invisible, like real life. You have to follow it, and in turn, rescue the victim that you've been tasked to find. For this design reason, blind people can play this game with the same success as sighted people.
You will find all sorts of things humans might not otherwise be able to discover.
Mission Statement
The purpose of creating this game, apart from having fun and trying out a mechanic I haven't seen anywhere else, is to make an internally accessible game for the vision impaired, but fun and visually appealing enough to be played and supported by mainstream gamers. Every game I've seen addresses accessibility as an afterthought (if it's addressed at all!). It's a box to check and move on as the development process wraps up. I wanted to start with that, instead, and build a game around it. I also think this is where the games industry needs to go. Accessibility isn't a bonus anymore, it's not extra. It's just part of what you have to do, and we're long overdo at improving how we do it. Lost and Hound is a great leap forward in that regard.
Note: this game is hard. It's not built to be excessively challenging or anything, but using sound the way that it does is something most sighted people never do. Playing this game will be like going to the gym for the first time, doing an exercise you've never done and the next day some of your muscles ache not because of the weights you lifted but because you used muscles differently than ever before. Similarly, this game uses audio as an informative source of information, instead of just a reactionary one like almost all other games.
