So before you tell me how nervous you are putting your material out there until it's nice and shiny, ask yourself: what is the point of a game development log?
(Keep in mind that I speak from experience)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The number one way to draw in people to play your game is to couple consistent posting with sharing of progress.
The key word is PROGRESS: it does NOT matter how "ugly" or "unfinished" you think it is, the point is to let people know that this is a stepping stone towards the final product you are promising.
And I hate to break it to you, but I speak from personal experience on both ends when I say that it is likely that some people will only want to follow your game, but not you. Some people are interested in your game's progress but not care too much for what you may post on your profile which covers everything. Giving your game its own page will allow people who would not otherwise interact to do so as the game would be separate from your profile. Your overall traction would be increased anyway, and maybe even sway some folks into following you for future works.
The game page function is a tool, and should be used as such ESPECIALLY if you want to profit from your game. If you want to publish your game on GameJolt, you have to make one anyway, so you might as well use it as a hub for every possible hurdle on this journey. The double-posting to your profile and itself that the game page allows for will save people the trouble of having to navigate through a "middle man" I.e. the "games" button on your profile) to get to your game.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is mainly aimed at the folks that refuse to do this at all as they finish the game and post to their profiles wondering why so few people show up to their game release in its first few months, or giving up on the game cos it "doesn't have enough traction for too long"......not to hate on those that don't like making more pages than necessary, but you REALLY need to cover all your bases before you start doubting yourself.
Of course, there is also the point of not being able to due to selecting the "GMR" type profile when you first sign on. Only the "DEV" type lets you have games uploaded, so a lot of people are unable to right off the bat. My advice to yall is to reach out to GJ support and get it changed, so that you can do so. Some extra work, I know but it is worth it, especially if you want your game to succeed financially.
