The most recent update to Illagus introduced a whole bunch of new artifacts, bringing the total to around 50. This was done with the intention of creating more variety and allowing people to go for certain "builds" every run, altering their playstyle. While I like where artifacts are currently at, there isn't a whole lot of choice involved, which is where this new system comes in.
Upgrade your Artifacts:
(Keep in mind that this is still very much a work in progress so things might change before the release)
Every artifact has been given a selection of upgrades. Currently the goal is to have at least 2 for each artifact, but more can be added in the future. The first upgrade will mostly be an increase in the base ability of the artifact, while the second will be a choice between either further increasing the base ability or possibly providing something new. (See the image below)
This is one of the more standard upgrades, others can provide things like short buffs on kill, guaranteed item drops from difficult enemies, increased boss damage, item duplication and more.
With this system you will not only be able to focus on certain artifacts that you like, but also partially change what they provide, giving you a whole new array of options. The way to upgrade these artifacts is through upgrade points. I'm currently thinking that you'll get 6 of these points no matter what (so enough to fully upgrade 3 artifacts). Additional points can be earned through different systems (think the Ashlands), this is however not yet set in stone and might change.
I hope you enjoyed this quick peek into the new mechanic and my current plans with it. You can expect another one of these posts with more news as we get closer to the next update release. As always, if you have any questions/suggestions I'd love to hear it.
Thank you for reading!
